An hour later, the estate was quiet. Two security guards stood at the iron outer gates, watching as Vanessa dragged a single black suitcase down the long driveway toward a hailed taxi cab. Her luxury credit cards were frozen, her designer wardrobe was stripped, and her standing in high society was erased.
Inside the mansion, the servants had cleaned the dining room. The scattered papers were gone, the table was wiped down, and soft sunlight filled the grand space once more.
Marcus walked into the living room, where Lily was sitting on a plush sofa with Mrs. Gable, drinking a cup of warm milk.
Marcus: Hey, chief. How are you holding up?
Lily: Is Mom gone, Daddy?
Marcus: Yes, sweetie. She's gone. And she won't ever bother us again.
Lily looked down at her teddy bear, her small face solemn.
Lily: I'm sorry I interrupted dinner, Daddy... I was scared you'd be mad at me.
Marcus dropped to his knees in front of his daughter, wrapping his arms around her tightly and pulling her close to his chest.
Marcus: Mad at you? Lily, you saved us today. You were the bravest little girl in the whole world.
Lily: Are we going to be okay?
Marcus: We are going to be better than okay. We have each other, and nobody is ever going to break this home apart again.
Mrs. Gable wiped a tear from her eye, smiling softly as she watched the father and daughter embrace.
Mrs. Gable: I'll prepare some fresh homemade cookies for dessert, Mr. Sterling. The peaceful kind.
Marcus: Thank you, Mrs. Gable. That sounds perfect.
