The Photo on the Marble

A Wealthy Woman Slapped Her Housekeeper Until An Old Man Saw A Photo banner

Arthur: What... what was your mother's name, child?

Elena: Her name was Rose, sir. Rose Vance.

Arthur: Rose... sweet Lord in heaven... Rose.

Victoria: Father, what are you doing on the floor? Get up! She's just a servant trying to make up a story!

Arthur: Silence, Victoria! Do not speak another word!

Arthur pulled out a small magnifying glass from his breast pocket, his fingers trembling as he examined the tiny tear on the corner of the black-and-white photograph.

Arthur: This photograph... it matches the missing piece in my study safe.

Elena: My mother kept it in a locket her whole life, sir. She told me never to lose it.

Victoria: Father, this is ridiculous! She probably stole that photo from the estate archives during her cleaning shift!

Arthur: I kept that photo locked in a steel safe that only I have the combination to, Victoria! Nobody could have stolen it!

Elena: I didn't steal anything! My mother gave it to me on her deathbed three months ago!

Arthur looked back at Elena, studying her soft brown eyes, her sharp jawline, and the small birthmark near her left ear.

Arthur: The resemblance... how did I not see it before?

Victoria: See what? She looks like every other hired help in this town!

Arthur: She looks exactly like my sister, Victoria! The sister who disappeared thirty-five years ago!

A collective gasp rippled through the grand ballroom. Guests leaned in closer, their hushed whispers filling the high-ceilinged room.

Victoria: Your sister? Aunt Rose? But she died in a boat accident in 1991!

Arthur: We thought she died! We searched for months and found nothing!

Elena: My mother told me she ran away because someone in this family paid a man to drive her out of the city.

Arthur turned his head slowly, his eyes narrowing as he glared directly at Victoria.

Arthur: Is that true, Victoria? Did your family have something to do with Rose vanishing?

Victoria: That's absurd! I was just a teenager back then! How would I know anything about your sister's runaway drama?

Elena: My mother kept letters, sir. Boxes of them. She told me if anything ever happened to her, I should come to this estate and find Arthur Sterling.

Arthur: Why didn't you come straight to me when you hired on three weeks ago, child?

Elena: Because Mrs. Sterling told me if I ever tried to speak to you directly, she would have me arrested for trespassing!

Arthur: She said what?

Victoria: I was protecting you, Father! You're an old man with a weak heart! We get hundreds of scammers trying to get a piece of the Sterling trust fund every single year!

Arthur: You don't protect me, Victoria. You protect your own inheritance!

Arthur placed a warm hand on Elena's shoulder, helping the shaking girl stand up from the marble floor.

Arthur: Stand up, my dear. No niece of mine will ever kneel on the floor of this house again.

Victoria: Niece?! Father, you can't be serious! You haven't even run a DNA test!

Arthur: I don't need a test to recognize my own blood, Victoria. But we will do one tonight just to shut your arrogant mouth!

Elena: I don't want money, sir... I just wanted to know why my mother was forced to live in poverty while her family lived in a mansion.

Arthur's eyes filled with tears as he looked at Elena's red, bruised cheek where Victoria had struck her.

Arthur: We are going to find out the truth tonight, my girl. Every single dark secret in this house is coming to light.
