Three weeks later, the morning sun shone brightly across the lush green lawns of the Sterling estate.
A large yellow delivery truck was parked in the circular driveway, unloading boxes of brand-new handcrafted oak furniture.
Clara stood on the front porch with a mug of steaming coffee, watching the workers carry a stunning white marble dining table through the front doors.
Mark stepped out onto the porch behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
Mark: What do you think of the new table, boss?
Clara: It's absolutely perfect, Mark. Much brighter than that dark mahogany monstrosity Arthur had in there.
Mark: Fresh start, fresh furniture.
Clara: Have you heard anything from Mr. Vance this morning about the grand jury hearing?
Mark: Yes. The grand jury formally indicted Arthur on four counts of felony embezzlement and bank fraud yesterday afternoon.
Clara: Did he post bail?
Mark: He couldn't. His legal defense team surrendered all his remaining bank accounts to satisfy the IRS tax liens.
Clara: So he's staying in custody until trial?
Mark: Exactly where he belongs. His attorney tried to ask me for a character reference to reduce his sentence.
Clara: You're kidding! After what he did to Lily?!
Mark: I told his lawyer that my character reference would consist of presenting the dining room police report to the presiding judge.
Clara smiled, turning around in his arms to look up into his eyes.
Clara: I love you, Mark. Thank you for always standing up for us.
Mark: I love you too, Clara. Always.
Lily came running out through the front glass doors, wearing a pink sun hat and holding her favorite toy teddy bear.
Lily: Mommy! Daddy! The delivery men said the new table is ready!
Mark: Is it time for our first official breakfast at the new table?
Lily: Yes! Auntie Evelyn brought fresh blueberry pancakes!
Evelyn stepped out onto the porch behind Lily, wearing a warm smile and holding a covered glass serving dish.
Evelyn: Good morning, family! Ready for the best pancakes in Chicago?
Clara: Come on in, Evelyn! The dining room is finally complete!
They all walked inside together, the sound of happy chatter and laughter filling the high-ceilinged marble halls.
The new white table sat right in the center of the sunlit room, surrounded by plush chairs and fresh yellow flowers in a glass vase.
There were no raised voices, no dark secrets, and no fear lingering in the air.
Mark pulled out a chair for his wife, then lifted his daughter up into her seat with a wide grin.
They sat down together as a complete, unbroken family under the full, brilliant daylight of their true home.
