The Stripping of Assets

The ambulance doors slammed shut, and the siren blared as the vehicle sped down the long private driveway toward the city center.

Inside the back of the emergency vehicle, Arthur held Vanessa's cold hand while the paramedic monitored her heart rate.

Paramedic: Blood pressure is stabilizing, General. The baby's heart rate is strong.

Vanessa: Thank God... oh, thank God.

Arthur: I told you, baby. You and the baby are going to be just fine.

Vanessa: I was so stupid, Dad. I thought he loved me.

Arthur: You weren't stupid. You were kind. He was the fool who mistook your kindness for weakness.

Vanessa wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice tightening with anger.

Vanessa: He transferred two million dollars out of our personal account this morning.

Arthur: I already know. My auditors flagged the transaction before his bank even processed it.

Vanessa: He bought Chloe a penthouse in the city.

Arthur: He bought her nothing. That money is currently frozen in an escrow account under federal review.

Vanessa looked up at her father, seeing the cold, calculated look in his eyes that had made him one of the most feared investors in the country.

Vanessa: What are you going to do to him?

Arthur: Everything I promised him I would do if he ever hurt you.

Arthur pulled out his encrypted satellite phone and hit a speed-dial button.

Lawyer: General Vance. We are ready on your command.

Arthur: Execute Phase One immediately. Freeze all corporate lines of credit associated with Julian Miller.

Lawyer: Understood, sir. What about the board meeting for Miller Logistics?

Arthur: Call an emergency session for six o'clock tonight. I will be attending personally as the majority shareholder.

Lawyer: And the woman? Chloe Montgomery?

Arthur: Send her father the audit reports from her family's firm. Let him see what his daughter has been doing with corporate funds.

Lawyer: Right away, General.

Arthur ended the call and placed the phone back inside his jacket.

Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Julian was pacing furiously across the marble floor, screaming into his phone.

Julian: What do you mean my card is declined?! I have four million dollars in that account!

Banker: Mr. Miller, I'm looking at the system right now. Your accounts have been flagged for suspected embezzlement by the Vance Legal Group.

Julian: Embezzlement?! That was my money!

Banker: The funds originated from a trust controlled by Arthur Vance, sir. We have a court injunction. All withdrawals are blocked.

Julian threw the phone against the wall, shattering the screen into dozens of pieces.

Chloe: Julian! My father just called me! He's screaming at me!

Julian: What did he say?!

Chloe: He said the Vance lawyers sent him proof that I used the company card for my apartment deposit! He fired me from the family firm!

Julian: Your father is a coward!

Chloe: Don't call my father a coward! You promised me I would be safe with you! You said you had total control of Vanessa's trust!

Julian: I did have control! Until her old man stepped in!

Chloe: Well, fix it! Call your lawyers!

Julian: With what money, Chloe?! My cards are dead!

Two security guards in black uniforms stepped into the foyer from the open front doors, their expressions stern and unyielding.

Security Guard: Mr. Miller, Miss Montgomery. You have fifteen minutes to pack your personal effects and leave the premises.

Julian: This is my property! I signed the lease!

Security Guard: The lease was backed by Vance Holdings. The lease has been terminated due to breach of contract. Leave now, or we will arrest you for trespassing.
