The quiet room inside the private maternity suite was filled with the soft hum of heart monitors and warm lamplight.
Dr. Harrison poured a glass of fresh water, handing it gently to Maya as she rested on the comfortable medical bed.
Dr. Harrison: Drink this, sweetheart. You've been under way too much stress today.
Maya: Thank you, Dad. I'm sorry for creating a scene in your hallway.
Dr. Harrison: Don't you ever apologize for standing up to those bullies, Maya.
Maya took a slow sip of water, looking out the large window at the city skyline below.
Maya: I really believed Julian loved me when we first got married.
Dr. Harrison: A man who loves you doesn't let his mother treat you like a servant.
Maya: The moment his mother found out I didn't have a high-society trust fund, everything changed.
Dr. Harrison: They only care about money, status, and corporate power.
Maya: They tried to force me to sign an agreement giving up full custody before the baby was even born.
Dr. Harrison's jaw tightened in anger as he set his clipboard down on the small side table.
Dr. Harrison: They asked you to sign away custody?!
Maya: Victoria brought a lawyer to my apartment yesterday while you were in surgery. She threatened to sue me for fraud if I didn't sign.
Dr. Harrison: Fraud?! On what grounds?!
Maya: She claimed I married Julian under false pretenses because I didn't disclose my financial status.
Dr. Harrison let out a cold, bitter laugh as he adjusted his stethoscope around his neck.
Dr. Harrison: That is ironic coming from a family whose logistics business is currently under federal tax audit.
Maya turned her head quickly, looking at her father with wide eyes.
Maya: What do you mean federal audit?
Dr. Harrison: My legal team has been looking into Vance Enterprises ever since Julian applied for our hospital vendor contract six months ago.
Maya: Did you find something bad?
Dr. Harrison: Victoria has been skimming funds from their corporate accounts to pay for her personal real estate properties in Florida.
Maya: Dad... does Julian know about that?
Dr. Harrison: Julian is listed as the co-signer on three of those shell company accounts, Maya.
Maya lowered her gaze, feeling a heavy weight settle in her chest at the realization of how deep the deceit ran.
Maya: He was using me to look like a settled family man while they moved money behind the scenes.
Dr. Harrison: Exactly. They wanted a quiet, sweet girl who wouldn't ask questions about their business filings.
Maya: But I did ask questions. I asked why Julian was taking business trips every weekend.
Dr. Harrison: And that's why Victoria wanted you out of the picture before the baby arrived.
A soft knock sounded at the door of the private suite, and a woman in a sharp navy suit walked inside carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Attorney Miller: Good afternoon, Dr. Harrison. Maya, it's good to see you looking comfortable.
Dr. Harrison: Thank you for coming so quickly, Sarah. Did you file the emergency injunctions?
Attorney Miller: Filed and approved by the family court judge thirty minutes ago.
Maya: What does the injunction do, Ms. Miller?
Attorney Miller: It freezes all contact from Julian and Victoria Vance, places a protective order on your baby's trust fund, and summons them both to a formal court hearing on Friday.
Maya felt a wave of relief wash over her, leaning back against the soft white pillows of the bed.
Maya: Thank you, Sarah. I just want my baby to be safe from them.
Attorney Miller: They won't come anywhere near you or this child ever again, Maya. I guarantee it.
