The grand foyer was dead silent once again, save for the gentle hum of the estate's central heating system.
David drops to his knees beside the injured woman surrounded by broken glass, holding her hand in desperation.
David: Forgive me!
Clara: Daddy...? Did she... did she leave?
David: She's gone, sweetheart. She's floating in the backyard pool and the police are already on their way.
Clara: My arm... it hurts so much to move...
David: I know, baby. Just keep your eyes open on me. The ambulance will be through those gates any second.
He squeezed her hand gently, pressing his palm against her uninjured fingers to transfer all his warmth.
Clara: Don't let her take the house, Daddy. It's all mom left us.
David: I promise you, not a single brick of this estate will ever touch her hands again.
Sirens wailed softly in the distance, growing louder as they turned down the long oak-lined private driveway.
David: Hear that? That's the sound of our lives finally returning to peace.
Clara: I'm so glad you checked the security monitors in time.
David: So am I, Clara. So am I. We're going to get through this together.
He lifted her carefully into his arms, stepping safely over the glittering shards of the broken mirror.
Can the father and daughter finally heal their wounds and restore the lost warmth of their home?
David: Let's go home, Clara. The nightmare is finally over.
