Returning Home She Found Her Elderly Parents Living On The Sidewalk

Marin stepped off the suburban bus, pulling her heavy suitcase behind her onto the cracked concrete. The midday heat hummed over the quiet neighborhood street, but her breath hitched in her throat the moment she looked toward the bus stop bench. Scattered across the dusty grass were torn cardboard boxes, plastic trash bags, and three people sitting directly on the pavement.

Marin: Mom? Dad?

Marin dropped the handle of her suitcase. Her hands flew up to cover her mouth as tears immediately flooded her eyes. Her trembling voice barely made a sound against the passing traffic.

Arthur: Marin? You came back early, sweetheart.

Her father’s voice was gravelly and weak. He sat propped against a concrete pillar, his worn jacket stained with dirt. Beside him, Marin’s mother held seven-year-old Leo close to her chest. In front of their crossed legs rested a torn piece of cardboard with three words scrawled in black marker: Anything helps.

Marin: Where is Russell?! Why are you sleeping out here on the street?!

Arthur: He kicked us out, Marin. He brought another woman into the house two nights ago and changed all the locks.

Marin: He did what?! This is my house! My name is on the deed!

Elena: He said you gave him full power of attorney before you left for your business trip, Marin. He called the sheriff and showed them signed papers.

Marin: I never signed anything like that! He forged my signature!

Marin’s chest heaved as rage burned through her veins. She reached into her beige vest pocket and pulled out her smartphone with trembling, furious fingers. She swiped to her private contacts, tapping a emergency security line she hadn't called in years.

Marin: Freeze all assets and transfer every single dollar out of the joint accounts right now.

Bank Director: Miss Sterling? Is that you? We need primary verification to lock the family trust.

Marin: You have my voice print and master code. Lock down the mansion, freeze his credit, and call my legal team. My husband just made the biggest mistake of his life.
