The garden fell into an absolute, deathly silence. Even the soft breeze through the pine trees seemed to stop.
Julian: Dad... what did you just say?
Howard: Maya's father, David Lin, helped me build Vance Logistics from a single garage into a billion-dollar company.
Chloe: That's... that's impossible! Why would David Lin's daughter be working as a catering server at my wedding?!
Howard: Because when David died four years ago, his corrupt estate executor stole his entire inheritance, leaving Maya and her mother with nothing.
Maya: Mr. Vance found out about my situation three weeks ago when he saw my name on the catering staff manifest for this estate.
Howard: I offered to pay her full tuition and give her back her father's shares in my company, but Maya refused to take a single dollar she didn't earn herself.
Guest murmurs swept through the lawn like a sudden wave of thunder. People were standing up from their chairs to get a better look at the soaked girl in the purple uniform.
Guest 3: David Lin was a saint! He funded the children's hospital downtown!
Guest 4: And Chloe just called his daughter a nobody and told her to learn her place?
Howard: You stood in that forty-thousand-dollar dress, Chloe, and called the daughter of the man who built this estate a 'nobody.'
Chloe's cheeks burned crimson. She looked desperately around the garden, but not a single guest would meet her eyes.
Chloe: I... I didn't know who she was! If I had known, I would never have spoken to her like that!
Howard: That is the most disgusting thing you've said all day, Chloe.
Chloe: What?! Why?!
Howard: Because it shouldn't matter who someone's father is! You should treat every human being on this earth with respect, whether they wear a tuxedo or a server's apron!
Maya looked up at Howard, her eyes brimming with tears of gratitude as the cold wind brushed against her wet uniform.
Maya: Thank you, Mr. Vance.
Howard: You don't ever have to thank me, Maya. Your father was the best friend I ever had, and I failed you by letting you slip through the cracks for four years.
Julian: Chloe... is this true? Did you really take two hundred thousand dollars from my account to pay off your father's debts?
Chloe: Julian, baby, listen to me! I was going to pay it back as soon as the trust fund opened up after the wedding!
Howard: There is no trust fund opening up, Julian. I frozen your access to all family accounts three hours ago.
Julian: You froze my accounts?!
Howard: Every single one. You've spent thirty years living off my hard work without ever learning the value of a dollar or the character of the people you invite into your life.
Chloe: You can't do this! The marriage certificate is already signed!
Howard: The pastor hasn't submitted the legal paperwork to the county clerk yet, Chloe. And as of right now, there will be no marriage.
