The bright chandelier light poured over the marble dining room, but the cold air inside made my skin prickle. I held my three-year-old daughter, Lily, tightly against my chest in my navy hoodie while her small fingers dug into my shoulder. Red, burning marks lined her tiny face where someone had slapped her, and her heavy sobs echoed through the quiet room.
David: Who did this to my daughter?
My mother-in-law, Victoria, sat at the head of the dark oak table, casually spinning a glass of expensive red wine between her long fingers. She looked up at me with a lazy, careless smile, completely ignoring the tears streaming down Lily's cheeks.
Victoria: It was just a joke. You need to toughen up, David.
David: You hurt my child!
Victoria: She was reachin' for my diamond necklace with dirty hands. Someone has to teach her manners since you clearly won't.
David: She's three years old, Victoria!
Victoria: And she's living under my roof tonight on my charity. Don't forget your place in this house.
I looked around the grand table at my wife's wealthy family, expecting someone to say something, but they all just stared down at their crystal plates. My blood boiled as I stepped closer to the head of the table.
David: She is a baby! You put your hands on a baby over a piece of jewelry?!
Victoria: I gave her a light pat on the hand. Stop acting like a dramatic street thug.
With one swift motion, I swiped my arm across the long dining table. Wine glasses shattered, high-end crystal flew through the air, and red wine splashed across Victoria's pristine white designer gown. She screamed in horror, jumping back from her chair as the glass hit the floor.
Victoria: My dress! You psychopath!
Richard: Come back here, you bastard!
My father-in-law, Richard, slammed his fists onto the table and stood up, his face turning bright red as he pointed a finger at me.
David: She's my family, you are not!
I turned my back on them, holding Lily close as I marched toward the massive front door of their million-dollar estate. But as the heavy oak door slammed shut behind us in the dark night air, I knew this wasn't just a simple family argument. They thought they could stomp on us because of their money, but they had no idea who I really was or what I was about to do to their precious family business.
