Two days after the canceled wedding, Mark sat at his kitchen table in his quiet suburban home. The morning sun poured through the window, shining on a plate of pancakes he had made for Lily.
Lily: Daddy, are we going to stay just the two of us now?
Mark: Yes, sweetie. Just the two of us. And we are going to be completely fine.
Lily: Good. I like it better when it's just us.
Mark smiled softly, reaching across the table to wipe maple syrup off her chin. The front doorbell rang, making Lily jump slightly in her chair.
Mark: Stay here, baby. Let me see who that is.
Mark walked to the front door and opened it, surprised to see Chloe's father, Arthur, standing on the porch holding a thick black leather folder.
Mark: Arthur. What are you doing here?
Arthur: I came to apologize, Mark. May I come in for five minutes?
Mark: If you're here to convince me to talk to Chloe, you are wasting your time.
Arthur: I am not here for Chloe. I am here as a man who is deeply ashamed of what his daughter became.
Mark paused, looking at the older man's tired eyes before stepping aside to let him into the hallway.
Mark: Talk fast, Arthur. Lily is in the kitchen.
Arthur: I spoke to the security team at the church venue yesterday, Mark. I had them pull the security camera footage from the hallway near the dressing rooms.
Mark: And what did you see?
Arthur: Chloe didn't just lock her in that room when she started crying. She actively snatched Lily's locket off her neck and threw it into the trash before locking the door.
Mark felt a fresh surge of rage tighten his chest. His knuckles turned white as he clenched his fists.
Mark: That locket belonged to my late wife. It had her picture inside.
Arthur: I know. The security guard found it in the trash bin and gave it back to me. Here it is.
Arthur opened his hand, revealing the small gold oval locket sitting in his palm. Mark took it, his hands shaking as he opened the small clasp to see his late wife's picture still safe inside.
Mark: Why would she do something so cruel to a child?
Arthur: Jealousy. Chloe wanted your complete attention, and she saw your daughter's memory of her mother as a threat to her control.
Mark: She is sick.
Arthur: She is spoiled and selfish. And I take full responsibility for raising her that way with her mother.
