The bright daylight streamed into the foyer of our mansion, lighting up the white marble floor and the double staircase. What was supposed to be a quiet morning quickly turned into a complete nightmare.
Clara: BE QUIET!
Clara stood over my six-year-old daughter, her face red with anger as she shouted down at her.
Lily: MOMMY! DADDY!
Lily clutched her floral backpack, her body shaking as tears ran down her face. She sobbed hysterically, backing away from the woman who was supposed to be taking care of her while my wife and I were away.
Clara: Shut your mouth right now! You don't speak to me like that!
Clara leaned in closer, her face twisting in pure rage as she screamed directly into the little girl's face. I was coming down the grand staircase, stepping off the bottom step when I saw Clara raise her hand like she was about to grab Lily by the collar.
Mark: Hey!
I walked forward, my heart beating fast with explosive anger. I stepped between them and delivered a hard slap right across Clara's face before she could touch my child.
Clara: Oh!
Clara reeled back, clutching her red cheek in shock. She stared at me in utter terror, her rage completely vanishing in an instant.
Mark: DO NOT CRY! STOP!
I turned away from her immediately and dropped to one knee, wrapping my arms around Lily.
Mark: I'VE GOT YOU, SWEETHEART. YOU'RE SAFE NOW.
Lily wrapped her arms tightly around my neck, hiding her face against my suit jacket while Clara cowered near the stairs. But as I held my daughter, I noticed something strange sticking out of Lily's small backpack zipper, something that shouldn't have been there.
