At seven thirty the next morning, the bright sun shone over our manicured front lawn.
I was in the kitchen pouring Leo a glass of orange juice when a dark blue pickup truck pulled aggressively into our driveway.
Maya: Mom! Mark is back!
My mother walked calmly into the kitchen holding a stack of legal documents and her coffee cup.
Ellen: Don't panic, Maya. Look right behind his truck.
I looked out the window and saw a white police cruiser pulling up right behind Mark's truck.
Mark stepped out of his vehicle wearing his work boots, his face bright red as he marched up our front walkway.
He pulled out his key and tried to insert it into the front door deadbolt, but the key wouldn't fit into the new keypad lock.
Mark: What the hell is this?! Ellen! Open this door right now!
He began pounding furiously on the heavy wooden door with his fist.
Mark: You changed the damn locks on me?!
My mother pressed the intercom button on the wall beside the front door.
Ellen: The locks were changed last night, Mark. You no longer have access to this residence.
Mark: This is illegal lock-out! Officer, are you seeing this?! She locked me out of my own house!
Officer Davis walked up the steps, pulling his notepad from his belt pocket.
Officer Davis: Sir, please step back from the door and calm down.
Mark: Calm down?! My wife locked me out after assaulting me yesterday!
My mother unlocked the door using her new security card and stepped out onto the porch, flanked by her lawyer, Mr. Sterling.
Lawyer: Good morning, Officer. I am Ellen's legal counsel, Arthur Sterling.
Officer Davis: Morning, counselor. We received a call regarding a domestic disturbance report filed last night.
Lawyer: Here is a copy of the temporary restraining order issued by Judge Miller at seven AM this morning.
Mr. Sterling handed a stamped legal document directly to Officer Davis.
Mark: A restraining order?! On what grounds?!
Lawyer: On the grounds of child endangerment, property destruction, and domestic intimidation, Mr. Vance.
Mark: I didn't touch anyone! She hit me! Look at my cheek!
Officer Davis: Sir, let me review the documents first.
Officer Davis scanned the legal papers while Mark stood on the lawn, sweating under his flannel shirt.
Lawyer: We also have timestamped video evidence showing Mr. Vance violently flipping a heavy wooden dining table near a minor child with special needs.
Officer Davis: Is the child injured?
Ellen: He suffered severe emotional distress, Officer. My daughter recorded the entire event on her phone.
Mark: It was an accident! I lost my balance and knocked the table over!
Maya: You screamed 'Get away from me you little bastard' and threw the table with both hands, Mark!
Mark turned his furious eyes toward me as I stood in the doorway.
Mark: You little snitch! You've been trying to ruin my marriage since day one!
Officer Davis: Sir! Watch your tone with the minor child right now!
Mark: Officer, this whole family is setting me up so they can take my money!
Lawyer: Mr. Vance, your prenuptial agreement explicitly states that this home is 100% separate property belonging to Mrs. Vance's estate trust.
Lawyer: Furthermore, you have thirty minutes under police supervision to retrieve your personal clothing items from the garage. Nothing else.
