The Crash Five Years Ago

Clara: Hold my hand, Leo. We're almost at the car.

Leo: Mommy, why was that lady so mean to us?

Clara: Because she's afraid of the truth, sweetie. People like her are always scared when the truth catches up to them.

Leo: Is that man my daddy?

Clara: We'll talk about that when we get back to our apartment, okay?

Clara opened the door of her small sedan, helping Leo into his car seat before sliding into the driver's seat herself.

Her hands were shaking against the steering wheel as the memories of that terrible stormy night five years ago came flooding back.

She had been married to Julian for two years, believing he was a devoted husband who loved her deeply.

She was pregnant with Leo when she accidentally discovered that Julian and his secretary, Victoria, were stealing money from her late father's real estate trust.

Julian: Clara, you're mistaken. Those were just routine investment transfers.

Clara: Investment transfers to a shell company registered under Victoria's name?!

Julian: You don't understand how business works, Clara.

Clara: I understand that you're stealing my inheritance! I'm going to the police tomorrow morning!

Victoria: You shouldn't have checked those files, Clara. You really shouldn't have.

That night, Clara took her car to drive to her lawyer's house, but the brakes failed on the mountain road during a heavy rainstorm.

The car spun out of control, crashing through the wooden guardrail and plunging into the freezing river below.

Julian and Victoria thought she had drowned along with her unborn baby, allowing them to claim her entire twelve-million-dollar inheritance and get married six months later.

But Clara had managed to kick open the broken window, dragging herself onto the muddy riverbank while bleeding from her forehead.

Doctor: Ma'am, you're lucky to be alive. The baby is safe, but you need rest.

Clara: Please... don't tell anyone I'm here. My husband tried to kill me.

Doctor: Are you sure about that?

Clara: He cut my brake lines. If he finds out I survived, he'll finish the job.

For five long years, Clara lived in a small neighboring town under a fake name, working twelve-hour shifts as a line cook to support Leo.

She saved every single dollar, waiting for the right moment when she had enough evidence to take back everything that was stolen from her.

When she saw an advertisement looking for private event caterers for the annual Vance Estate Charity Gala, she knew her time had come.

Leo: Mommy, your face looks mad.

Clara: I'm not mad, baby. I'm just ready.

Leo: Ready for what?

Clara: Ready to make sure no one ever hurts us again.

Clara started the engine and backed out of the driveway, her mind fixed on the legal battle that was about to unfold.
