Detective Miller: Mr. Vance, I need you to step down to the precinct with me to sign the evidence transfer forms.
Attorney Vance: Right behind you, Detective. Maya, I've arranged for private security to guard your door tonight.
Maya: Thank you, Mr. Vance. For everything.
Attorney Vance: Your father was my dearest friend, Maya. I promised him I would protect you, even if it took years to gather the evidence.
As the lawyer and detective prepared to leave, loud shouting echoed down the corridor outside the room.
Eleanor: Get your filthy hands off my suit! Do you know how much this green sweater costs?!
Two city police officers escorted Eleanor down the hallway in steel handcuffs, her wrists pinned behind her back.
Police Officer: Watch your step, ma'am. You're going to the central booking station.
Eleanor: Maya! Look at me! Tell these people to let me go!
The officers stopped briefly in front of Maya's open door as Detective Miller stepped out into the hallway.
Detective Miller: Mrs. Vance, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Eleanor: I don't care about my rights! Maya, you ungrateful brat! I gave you a roof over your head!
Maya: You gave me bruises, Eleanor. And now the state is giving you a cell.
Eleanor: You think you're so smart! You won't last a month running your father's business alone!
Maya: I won't be alone. I have my father's real friends, my father's real lawyers, and the truth on my side.
Eleanor glared at Maya through the doorway, her eyes bulging with unhinged fury as she realized she had lost everything.
Eleanor: David! Where is David?! Tell him to call the governor!
Police Officer: Your son is currently being questioned in room three downstairs for grand larceny conspiracy, ma'am.
Eleanor: What?! David wouldn't know how to conspire if his life depended on it! I did everything! I made all the decisions!
Detective Miller clicked his pen and quickly made a note on his pad.
Detective Miller: Did you just admit on record that you directed all the fraudulent transfers, Mrs. Vance?
Eleanor froze, realizing her own loud mouth had just handed the detective an explicit spoken confession in front of four witnesses.
Eleanor: I... I didn't mean it like that!
Detective Miller: Take her away, officers. We have everything we need.
The officers turned Eleanor around and marched her toward the elevator bank. She kicked her feet against the floor, screaming curses until the heavy metal doors slid shut, cutting off her voice completely.
Nurse Sarah: Good riddance to bad garbage.
Maya: She spent five years making me feel helpless, Sarah.
Nurse Sarah: Well, she's the helpless one now.
Maya adjusted herself in the bed, sitting up slightly higher as the evening breeze drifted through the small cracked window of her room.
