Justice In The Foyer

Julian: Arthur, you can't strip my executive voting rights over a domestic dispute!

Mr. Vance: I am bound by your father's written instructions, Julian. The court will enforce this document within twenty-four hours.

Julian: This is ridiculous! I paid off the estate taxes last month! I keep this entire mansion running!

Mrs. Sterling: You paid the taxes using the dividend money my husband left for my medical care, Julian.

Julian: I reallocated those funds for corporate stability!

Mrs. Sterling: You starved my household budget while buying luxury sports cars for your garage downtown!

Julian clenched his jaw, his eyes darting toward the security camera footage still playing on Lily's laptop.

Julian: Lily, close that laptop right now!

Lily: No! I already sent the video file to Mr. Vance's office email fifteen minutes ago!

Julian: You sent it to his office?!

Mr. Vance: Yes, Julian. My paralegal confirmed receipt of the surveillance video five minutes before I arrived.

Mr. Vance: The video clearly documents physical battery against Mrs. Sterling as well as Richard's theft of the diamond ring.

Richard: I put the ring back! You saw me give it back to Julian!

Mr. Vance: Returning stolen property after being caught on camera does not erase the crime of grand larceny, Richard.

Two local police officers in dark blue raincoats pulled up to the front entrance, their yellow emergency lights flashing through the tall stained-glass windows.

Clara stepped back as the officers pushed open the heavy front door.

Officer Davis: Good evening. We received a call regarding a domestic disturbance and theft at this address.

Mr. Vance: Officer, I am Arthur Vance, the estate attorney. We have formal documentation and video evidence for your report.

Julian: Wait! Officer, this is a private family matter! We don't need police intervention!

Mrs. Sterling: I called the police myself, Julian.

Julian turned around in total disbelief, his voice choking with panic.

Julian: Mother... you called the cops on your own sons?

Mrs. Sterling: I called the police to protect my household from two greedy men who care about nothing but money.

Officer Davis: Ma'am, who committed the physical assault?

Mrs. Sterling pointed her cane directly at Julian, her face firm and unyielding under the bright chandelier light.

Mrs. Sterling: My elder son, Julian Sterling, struck me across the face in front of my staff.

Officer Davis: Sir, step over here and put your hands behind your back.

Julian: You can't arrest me! Do you know how much money my family donates to the city police department?!

Officer Davis: I don't care how much money you donate, sir. Hands behind your back right now.
