The sleek white cabinets of the modern kitchen caught the cool morning light, but the air inside was suffocatingly heavy.
Mark: IN THIS HOUSE, YOU HAVE TO OBEY ME!
Clara: I JUST GOT BACK FROM WORK!
Mark took a fast step forward, his shadow looming over Clara as she stood trembling beside the marble countertop.
Mark: I don't care how tired you are! When I ask you a question, you answer me right away!
Clara: I worked a twelve-hour shift at the hospital, Mark! I can barely stand on my feet!
Mark: Don't you raise your voice at me in my own house!
Before Clara could even raise her arm to defend herself, Mark's hand flew across the space between them. A sharp, stinging slap cracked through the room, the impact spinning Clara around. She stumbled back against the counter, her palm immediately slapping over her hot, burning cheek.
Tears spilled over her lower eyelids, streaming down her face in silent, frantic rivers. She stared at the man she had loved for four years, seeing a terrifying stranger behind his dark eyes.
Mark: That will teach you to show me some respect.
Clara lowered her hand from her bruised cheek, her breathing shaking her entire chest as a cold, absolute realization settled into her heart.
Clara: NOW WE ARE COMPLETELY DONE!
Mark: Oh, don't be dramatic, Clara. You're not going anywhere.
Clara didn't answer with words. Her right hand reached over, her trembling fingers curling around the band of her diamond engagement ring. With one smooth, deliberate pull, she slid the sparkling ring off her finger.
She placed the ring firmly onto the cold marble surface. It landed with a loud, sharp clink that seemed to vibrate through the entire house. She turned her back on him and walked out, leaving Mark standing motionless in the kitchen, utterly unaware of the storm he had just unleashed.
