By late afternoon, the golden sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm light through Arthur's large private study.
David, Arthur's long-time corporate attorney, sat across the heavy wooden desk, spreading out several financial files.
David: Arthur, you're not going to believe what I found when I pulled Victoria's bank activities from the last two months.
Arthur: What did she do, David?
David: She opened three separate offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under a shell corporation named Vance Holdings LLC.
Arthur: She forged my signature on business accounts?
David: She tried to. She transferred nearly three hundred thousand dollars out of your family trust account last Tuesday alone.
Arthur leaned back in his leather executive chair, a cold smile touching his lips.
Arthur: So she wasn't just abusing my daughter. She was actively robbing me blind.
David: Exactly. She knew the marriage was failing, so she was preparing a massive exit fund before you realized what was happening.
Arthur: Does the bank have the freeze orders?
David: Every single transaction was flagged and reversed two hours ago. The money is safely back in Lily's trust fund.
Arthur: And what about the divorce paperwork?
David: Filed at the county court. Because of the security footage of the assault, the judge signed an emergency temporary restraining order within twenty minutes.
A soft knock sounded on the study door, and Elena stepped in, holding a tray with two fresh cups of dark coffee.
Elena: Excuse me, Mr. Vance. I brought some coffee for you and Mr. David.
Arthur: Thank you, Elena. Set it right here on the desk.
David: Thank you, Elena. Great work holding down the fort today.
Elena: Just doing my job, sir. Lily is downstairs drawing in her coloring book.
Arthur: Is she feeling okay, Elena?
Elena: She’s smiling again, Mr. Vance. The red mark on her face is fading fast.
Arthur: That is the best news I've heard all day.
Elena smiled warmly, picking up the empty tray and stepping back toward the office door.
Elena: Dinner will be ready in thirty minutes, sir. Pizza and fresh fruit, just like Lily asked.
Arthur: Wonderful. Thank you, Elena.
As the door closed, David picked up his coffee cup and looked at Arthur with serious eyes.
David: You got lucky today, Arthur. If you hadn't come home early from the office, who knows how long Victoria would have gotten away with this.
Arthur: I didn't come home early by accident, David. I forgot my passport for the Chicago trip.
David: Fate works in mysterious ways, my friend.
Arthur: It wasn't fate. It was protection. My late wife used to say that angels watch over our little girl.
David: She certainly had an angel today.
Arthur looked out his study window at the grand front lawn. The gated entrance was quiet, free from the toxic presence that had threatened his home for months.
Arthur: Victoria thought she could buy status and use my family as a footstool. She learned the hard way that family is the one thing I will destroy anyone to protect.
