Six months later, the Manhattan Criminal Courtroom was packed with reporters and news cameras. Victoria stood at the defense table wearing a simple black jumpsuit, her hair tied back in a plain ponytail. Gone were the designer clothes, the expensive jewelry, and the arrogant smirk.
Standing at the prosecution table was Marcus Vance, flanked by his legal team and Sarah, who walked smoothly into the courtroom without her mobility scooter.
Judge Thompson: Order in the court! We are here for the final sentencing of Victoria Miller in the matter of felony assault and civil distress.
Defense Lawyer: Your Honor, my client has already lost her job, her home, and her standing in the business community. We ask for probation and community service.
Prosecutor: Your Honor, the victim was an elderly woman with pre-existing spinal conditions. The defendant showed zero remorse until she realized who the victim's son was.
Judge Thompson adjusted her glasses, looking down sternly at Victoria.
Judge Thompson: Miss Miller, do you have anything to say before I read your sentence?
Victoria stepped up to the microphone, her voice trembling softly.
Victoria: I am deeply sorry for my actions. I let pride and greed ruin my judgment. I know I hurt Mrs. Vance, and I accept full responsibility.
Judge Thompson: Pride goes before a fall, Miss Miller. Today, that fall lands you in state prison.
The judge slammed her gavel down on the wooden desk.
Judge Thompson: I sentence you to eighteen months in state custody, followed by three years of mandatory community service at elderly care facilities. Furthermore, all civil damages totaling three hundred thousand dollars will be paid directly to the Sarah Vance Foundation for Elder Care.
Victoria closed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheeks as court bailiffs stepped forward to lock the handcuffs around her wrists once again.
As Victoria was led out through the side doors, Marcus put a loving arm around his mother's shoulders.
Sarah: The foundation will help a lot of people with that money, Marcus.
Marcus: That was the goal, Mom. Turning a moment of cruelty into years of protection for people who need it most.
Sarah: Let's go home, son. I think we've had enough airport drama to last a lifetime.
Marcus chuckled, escorting his mother out into the bright afternoon sun, where their driver stood waiting. Justice had been served, the family was whole, and no one would ever shove Sarah Vance again.
