The morning rush at the international airport continued to surge around the quiet corner near gate twelve.
Travelers rolled their heavy suitcases past the seating area, completely unaware of the emotional drama unfolding near the window.
Officer Miller remained kneeling beside Lily, his stern expression softening into one of deep compassion.
Officer Miller: What is your name, sweetheart? Can you tell me a little bit about your family?
Lily: My name is Lily. And my mom said I had to find Grandpa before he leaves forever.
Officer Miller: Your grandfather? Is that the older gentleman sitting over on the bench across the aisle?
Lily: Yes. That's him. That's my grandpa Thomas.
Officer Miller: Why didn't you just walk over and talk to him yourself, Lily?
Lily: Mommy said he was very sad and that he might not believe me without proof.
Officer Miller: What kind of proof do you have in that little backpack of yours?
Lily: I have her yellow scarf, a picture, and a very important piece of paper.
Miller glanced over at the older man, who sat slumped over with his face buried deep inside his weathered hands.
The man's shoulders shook slightly with every suppressed sigh, a lifetime of grief etched deeply into his features.
Officer Miller: Let's go walk over there together, Lily. You don't have to be afraid.
Lily: Will you help me talk to him, officer? My legs feel very heavy today.
Officer Miller: Of course I will. Come on, let's take a little step right over to his bench.
Lily nodded slowly, her small fingers wrapping tightly around the bright yellow scarf as she took a tentative step forward.
Her shoes clicked softly against the pristine marble flooring as they crossed the open space between the waiting rows.
The older man didn't look up as the footsteps approached, lost entirely inside the dark memories of his painful past.
Officer Miller: Excuse me, sir? Sorry to disturb you, but we need your attention for just a moment.
Thomas: I'm waiting for a boarding call. Please leave me alone.
Officer Miller: I think you'll want to look at who just walked up to your seat, Mr. Thomas.
Thomas raised his head slowly, his tired eyes blinking against the bright fluorescent lights of the terminal hall.
He looked at the towering police officer before his gaze dropped down to the little girl standing right beside him.
Thomas: Who are you? Why are you staring at an old man like that?
Lily: I'm not staring, Grandpa. I came to bring you something very important.
Thomas gasped softly, his breath catching in his throat as he stared at the familiar shade of the yellow scarf.
Thomas: Where... where did you get that scarf, child? That pattern belongs to my daughter.
Lily: Mommy gave it to me before she went away to the stars.
Can Thomas find the strength to listen to the little girl's story before his gate finally closes for good?
