The Missing Trust Fund

Marcus: Sofia, please tell the guests we have an urgent family emergency. Keep the catering open and tell everyone to enjoy the food.

Sofia: Are you two going to be okay? Do you want me to come with you?

Elena: No, Sofia. Stay here and keep an eye on things. If Patricia comes back, call the police immediately.

Sofia: Be careful, Elena. She looked dangerous when she left.

Marcus took Elena's arm, guiding her out through the side entrance toward his black sedan. Elena held up the muddy train of her white wedding dress so it wouldn't drag across the gravel driveway.

Marcus: I can't believe my own mother would do this. Stealing from my sister's medical fund?

Elena: Greed changes people, Marcus. When your father passed away three years ago, she thought she would control everything forever.

Marcus: She knew that the moment we got married, you would become my legal co-signatory on the family trust.

Elena: That's why she tried so hard to stop the wedding. She wanted to stall us until next week when the transfer goes through.

Marcus started the engine, pulling out of the church parking lot onto the busy city street under the bright afternoon sun.

Marcus: I'm calling my private investigator, Harrison. He's been looking into Charles Vance's firm for two months.

Elena: Put him on speakerphone, Marcus.

The phone rang three times before a deep, calm voice answered the call.

Harrison: Marcus? Congratulations, man! How was the ceremony?

Marcus: Harrison, we have a major problem. My mother tried to ruin the ceremony and dropped a note with routing numbers on it.

Harrison: Routing numbers? Let me guess... First National Bank, ending in 39?

Marcus: How did you know that?

Harrison: Because I'm sitting outside Charles Vance's office building right now. Your mother's light blue sedan just pulled into the executive parking garage two minutes ago.

Elena: Harrison! Is Charles in the building with her?

Harrison: Yes, Elena. And they just requested an emergency courier wire service from First National Bank.

Marcus: They're trying to move the money right now!

Harrison: You have about twenty minutes before the offshore wire clearance goes through. Where are you?

Marcus: We're five minutes away on Main Street. Keep eyes on that front entrance!

Harrison: Will do. But Marcus... be prepared. Charles has two armed security guards in the lobby.

Marcus: I don't care if he has a whole army, Harrison. Nobody steals from my sister.

Marcus slammed his foot on the accelerator, the sedan speeding toward the tall glass skyscraper in the distance. Elena held onto the dashboard, her eyes bright with determination despite the mud stains on her dress.

Elena: We are stopping this today, Marcus. Once and for all.
