The Bail Hearing Battle

The grand courtroom was filled with reporters, police officers, and corporate observers. Sunlight streamed through the tall stained-glass windows as Judge Margaret Miller took her seat at the elevated bench.

Judge Miller: Docket item 402: State of Texas versus David Vance. Charges: Grand larceny, corporate fraud, felony assault, and false imprisonment.

David stood at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands restrained by heavy waist chains. His navy sweater was gone, replaced by the grim reality of a holding cell.

Public Defender: Your Honor, my client is a prominent businessman with deep roots in this community. We request reasonable bail set at fifty thousand dollars.

Prosecutor: The State strongly opposes bail, Your Honor. Mr. Vance poses an extreme flight risk and a direct physical threat to the victims.

David: Your Honor, this is a conspiracy! My stepsisters are trying to steal my father's company!

Judge Miller: Silence in my courtroom, Mr. Vance! You will speak only through your counsel!

Chloe stood up from the front gallery bench, holding a manila folder sealed with a red wax stamp.

Chloe: Your Honor, may I present evidence on behalf of the estate's primary beneficiaries?

Public Defender: Objection, Your Honor! Miss Hayes is not an attorney of record in this criminal proceeding!

Judge Miller: Overruled. As the named victim and corporate trust executor, I will hear her statement. Step forward, Miss Hayes.

Chloe walked up to the podium, her green velvet blazer straight, her voice clear and unwavering as she addressed the judge.

Chloe: Your Honor, this folder contains flight manifests purchased by David Vance three days ago under an alias.

David: She's lying! She forged those tickets!

Judge Miller: One more outburst from you, Mr. Vance, and I will cite you for contempt!

Chloe: He purchased two one-way tickets to Switzerland departing tonight at midnight. He also wired eight million dollars to a non-extradition bank account in Zurich yesterday morning.

Prosecutor: Your Honor, this proves clear intent to flee the country and evade prosecution.

David: Maya, tell them! Tell them I never hurt you! Tell them Chloe made you say those things!

Maya stood up from her seat beside Chloe, stepping forward to stand side-by-side with her big sister at the podium.

Maya: David... you locked me in a room for four days without my phone. You bruised my sister's neck when she came to save me.

David: Maya, please... we're family!

Maya: Family doesn't steal. Family doesn't abuse. You are not my family anymore.

The gallery erupted into quiet murmurs as Judge Miller adjusted her glasses, reviewing the financial documents submitted by Chloe.

Judge Miller: The evidence of financial embezzlement and flight risk is overwhelming. Furthermore, the physical evidence of domestic violence provided by the arresting officers cannot be ignored.

David: Your Honor, please! I have a business to run!

Judge Miller: Bail is hereby DENIED. The defendant will remain in custody at the county jail pending trial.

David: NO! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! CHLOE! MAYA! I WILL DESTROY YOU BOTH!

Two bailiffs grabbed David by the arms, dragging him out through the side door as his furious screams echoed off the high courtroom walls until the heavy doors slammed shut.

Maya: He's really not coming back, is he?

Chloe: He's never going to touch us ever again, Maya. It's really over.
