Three months later, the morning sun illuminated the executive office on the top floor of the Hayes Global Tower. The fresh scent of lilies filled the room, replacing the dusty, heavy atmosphere that David had left behind.
Chloe sat at her father's restored mahogany desk, signing the final paperwork for the employee pension trust fund. Maya walked into the room carrying two warm cups of coffee, setting one gently on the desk.
Maya: Here's your morning coffee, CEO Hayes.
Chloe: Thank you, Director Maya. How was the foundation board meeting this morning?
Maya: Incredible. We just approved fifty new grants for local women's shelters across Texas.
Chloe: Dad would be so proud of what you're doing with the foundation, Maya.
Maya: He'd be proud of both of us. The company stock hit an all-time high yesterday afternoon.
A soft knock sounded at the office door, and Director Vance walked inside holding a legal document.
Director Vance: Excuse me, Chloe. The district attorney's office just called with an update on David's trial.
Chloe: What did they say, Director Vance?
Director Vance: David accepted a plea bargain thirty minutes ago. He pled guilty to all counts of corporate fraud, extortion, and assault.
Maya: What is his sentence?
Director Vance: Fifteen years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Furthermore, the court has ordered full restitution of all stolen funds to the Hayes family trust.
Chloe: Fifteen years... justice has finally been served.
Director Vance: Indeed it has, Miss Hayes. The entire board wants to express our deepest gratitude to you both for saving this firm from complete ruin.
Chloe: Thank you, Director Vance. Please inform the department heads that we will be hosting a company-wide celebration dinner this Friday evening.
Director Vance: Right away, Chloe. Have a wonderful afternoon, ladies.
Director Vance bowed his head respectfully and exited the office, leaving the two sisters alone near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city skyline.
Maya: Fifteen years is a long time, Chloe.
Chloe: He chose his own path, Maya. He thought money and intimidation made him invincible, but he forgot that truth always wins in the end.
Maya: Look at the city down there... it feels like we can finally breathe again.
Chloe wrapped her arm around Maya's shoulders, drawing her sister close as they looked out over the sparkling glass skyscrapers shining in the clear daylight.
Chloe: We survived the storm, Maya. And from now on, nobody will ever take our home, our freedom, or our family's legacy away from us ever again.
Maya: Together forever?
Chloe: Together forever.
The two sisters smiled as the warm sunlight washed over them, knowing that their father's legacy was finally safe in the hands of the two women who loved him most.
