Chloe stared at the small folded paper taped to the back of the velvet cushion, her breath catching in her throat.
Chloe: Toby, sweetie... where did this pillow come from?
Toby: The mean lady in the purple dress gave it to me! She said don't let anyone touch the bottom!
Chloe looked up toward the front row where Brandon's mother, Victoria Vance, sat wearing a floor-length plum purple gown.
Victoria’s posture stiffened instantly, her sharp eyes narrowing as she noticed Chloe examining the pillow.
Brandon: Chloe? Honey, is everything okay? Is Toby feeling sick?
Chloe: Brandon, look at the bottom of this ring pillow.
Brandon leaned down, his brow furrowing as he noticed the envelope taped securely to the velvet lining.
Brandon: What is that doing there? I gave the rings to the best man ten minutes ago.
Victoria: Brandon, darling, stop wasting everyone’s time! The priest is waiting and the guests are watching!
Victoria stood up from her front-row seat, her high heels clicking loudly against the polished marble floor as she walked over.
Victoria: Give the rings to my son, Chloe. You are making a scene on your own wedding day.
Chloe: Mrs. Vance, why is my late mother's name written on this envelope?
The room went dead silent as guests in the front rows leaned forward to listen.
Victoria: Don't be ridiculous! That’s just a piece of trash from the storage room where the staff prepped the flowers!
Toby: No! Purple lady put it there! I saw her with the sticky tape!
Guest 3: Did the toddler just say she taped something to the ring pillow?
Guest 4: What is going on up there at the altar?
Brandon looked back and forth between his mother's pale face and Chloe’s shaking hands.
Brandon: Mom... did you touch the ring pillow before Toby walked down the aisle?
Victoria: Of course not! I was in the bridal suite adjusting my makeup! Are you taking the word of a three-year-old child over your own mother?
Chloe: This is my mother's handwriting, Brandon. I would recognize her script anywhere in the world.
Chloe carefully peeled the clear tape away from the navy velvet, pulling the envelope free.
Victoria: Hand that over immediately, Chloe! It is private property!
Victoria reached out to snatch the paper, but Brandon stepped firmly between his mother and his bride.
Brandon: Back up, Mom. Right now.
Victoria: Brandon! You are disrespecting me in front of the entire family!
Brandon: You’re acting terrified over a piece of paper, Mom. Why?
Chloe opened the flap of the envelope with trembling fingers, pulling out a single sheet of official bank stationary.
Chloe: This is an original trust fund audit document from my mother’s estate account in Chicago.
Brandon: What? How could that be inside our ring pillow?
Chloe: Because someone tried to hide it before the ceremony... and the main account beneficiary signature at the bottom isn't my mother's signature at all.
Chloe turned the paper toward Brandon, pointing at the line stamped with a red notary seal.
Chloe: It’s signed by Victoria Vance.
