The Secret In The Wood

Mark: What's your name, little buddy?

Leo: My name is Leo. Leo Raudin Vance.

Mark: Leo... You have my father's eyes. You really do.

Leo: Are you my brother?

Mark: Yes, Leo. I'm your older brother, Mark.

The guests in the front row began whispering louder, pointing at Mark and the boy standing next to the casket.

Uncle Richard: Mark, what is the meaning of this? Raudin never mentioned having another son!

Mark: Uncle Richard, look at the boy's face. Look at his hands. He's a Vance.

Uncle Richard: But Evelyn said he was just a trespassing beggar!

Mark: Evelyn lied. She's been lying to this entire family for years.

Mark took the wooden toy car from Leo's small hands and flipped it over under the bright daylight.

Mark: Look at this carving. My father carved this exact same pattern on my crib thirty years ago.

Leo: He made it in the workshop behind the blue house. He told me to keep it safe.

Mark: The workshop in Chicago? The one Dad said he sold five years ago?

Leo: He lived there with my mom. But my mom got sick last year and went to heaven.

Mark felt his heart drop into his stomach as he knelt back down to Leo's eye level.

Mark: Your mother passed away last year?

Leo: Yes. And then Dad got sick too. He told me if anything happened to him, I had to bring this car to the church.

Uncle Richard: This is insane! If Raudin had a secret family, why wouldn't he tell us?

Mark: Because Evelyn was controlling his life and his money, Richard! You know how she operated!

Aunt Clara: Mark is right. Ever since Raudin fell ill, Evelyn blocked all of us from visiting his house.

Mark: She isolated him so she could take control of the family real estate firm and the main bank accounts.

Leo pulled on Mark's coat sleeve, pointing toward the heavy wooden doors at the front of the hall.

Leo: Mark... there's a paper inside the car.

Mark: What do you mean, Leo?

Leo: Dad said the car has a door on the bottom. He said to give the paper to the man in the dark suit.

Mark looked closely at the wooden toy car, noticing a tiny silver pin hidden near the rear axle.

He pressed the pin, and the bottom panel of the wooden car slid open, revealing a tightly rolled piece of paper.

Uncle Richard: Is that a document?

Mark: It's an original handwritten addendum to my father's last will and testament.
