The Bride's Cruel Stage

Vanessa: Mr. Vance, please, you must be confusing her with someone else!

Mr. Vance: I would recognize those eyes anywhere in the world, young lady!

Sarah: Mr. Vance... please, you don't have to make a scene because of me.

Mr. Vance: Make a scene? My dear, this hall should be bowing down to you right now!

Vanessa: She's a floor nurse at a public hospital! She doesn't even make fifty thousand a year!

Mr. Vance: Silence, Vanessa! You don't deserve to breathe the same air as this woman!

Brandon stepped off the raised platform, his face pale as he walked toward Sarah.

Brandon: Sarah... are you the nurse from the night of November fourteenth?

Sarah: I worked the night shift in the intensive care unit that week, Brandon.

Brandon: The nurse who held my hand for twelve hours when my lung collapsed?

Sarah: Your vitals were dropping fast. I stayed past my shift to monitor your oxygen.

Brandon: They told me a shift nurse refused to go home until I woke up from the coma!

Mr. Vance: It wasn't just a shift nurse, son. It was her!

Sarah looked down at her lap, her dress wrinkled where her hands had been clutching the fabric.

Sarah: It was just my job. Any nurse would have done it.

Mr. Vance: No! The head surgeon told me three other nurses left at five o'clock!

Mr. Vance: You stayed without pay for fourteen extra hours because my son's heart rate was failing!

Vanessa: Brandon, come back up here! We have a schedule to keep for the cake cutting!

Brandon: Shut your mouth, Vanessa!

Vanessa gasped, resting her hand against her pearl necklace in shock.

Vanessa: How dare you speak to me like that on our wedding day!

Brandon: You just humiliated the woman who kept me alive so I could even stand at this altar!

Vanessa: I was just making a joke! Everyone knew it was a lighthearted joke!

Mr. Vance: There was nothing funny about your arrogance, Vanessa.

Mr. Vance: My family donated four million dollars to this venue tonight because you claimed you were a woman of grace.

Vanessa: I am! I come from a good family! My mother is a board member at the country club!

Mr. Vance: Your heart is hollow, girl.

Sarah wiped a stray tear from her cheek, trying to stand up from the table.

Sarah: Mr. Vance, Brandon... congratulations on the wedding. I should probably leave now.

Brandon: Don't you dare walk out, Sarah. You are the most important guest in this room.

Vanessa: Brandon! She's sitting at table twenty-four for a reason!

Brandon: She's sitting there because you put her there to bully her!

Vanessa: She embarrassed our family by showing up in that cheap grey dress!

Brandon: She bought that dress because she spends her salary buying medicine for pediatric patients!

The guests around the table began whispering loudly, glaring up at Vanessa on stage.

Guest 1: That bride is absolutely heartless.

Guest 2: Did you hear that? The nurse bought medicine for sick kids!

Guest 3: Vanessa should be ashamed of herself!

Vanessa's mother rushed up to the stage, grabbing her daughter's arm frantically.

Stepmother: Vanessa, fix this right now! Mr. Vance controls your father's business loan!

Vanessa: Mom, she's ruining my pictures!

Stepmother: Forget the pictures, you foolish girl! Look at Brandon's face!

Brandon stood right in front of Sarah, taking both of her hands into his.

Brandon: I looked for you for six months, Sarah. The hospital administration wouldn't give me your name because of privacy rules.

Sarah: They have strict HIPAA laws, Brandon. We aren't allowed to give out staff contact details to former ICU patients.

Brandon: Every night I prayed I would find the guardian angel who kept me breathing.

Brandon: And to think you were living in the same city... while my fiancee treated you like dirt.

Vanessa: Brandon, darling, step away from her! Let's just do the bouquet toss!

Brandon: There isn't going to be a bouquet toss, Vanessa.
