The Debt That Saved A Life

Vanessa: What do you mean there's no bouquet toss?! We paid thirty thousand dollars for the floral arrangements!

Brandon: I don't care if we paid a million dollars for the flowers, Vanessa.

Brandon: You showed me who you really are in front of four hundred people today.

Stepmother: Brandon, please! She's just nervous! Wedding stress makes brides say silly things!

Mr. Vance: Cruelty is not a symptom of wedding stress, Mrs. Miller. It's a character trait.

Stepmother: Mr. Vance, our families have a contract! My husband's firm is handling your estate trust!

Mr. Vance: As of this exact second, that contract is terminated.

Stepmother: You can't terminate an estate contract without ninety days notice!

Mr. Vance: Watch me, Evelyn. My corporate lawyers will have the revocation papers on your husband's desk by eight in the morning.

Vanessa grabbed the stage microphone again, her voice screeching through the speakers.

Vanessa: THIS IS MY DAY! YOU ARE ALL SUPPOSED TO BE CELEBRATING ME!

Brandon: I made a terrible mistake when I put this ring on your finger six months ago.

Vanessa: Brandon, don't you dare say that! We signed the marriage license an hour ago!

Mr. Vance: Actually, Vanessa, the officiant hasn't filed the marriage license with the county clerk yet.

Vanessa: What?!

Mr. Vance: I am a licensed notary in this state. The document is sitting in my coat pocket waiting for my final stamp.

Mr. Vance: And that stamp will never touch that paper.

Vanessa let out a sharp cry, her hands shaking as she stared down at Mr. Vance.

Vanessa: You can't do that! That's illegal!

Mr. Vance: It's entirely legal when the groom revokes his consent before filing!

Brandon looked up at the stage, pulling his silk boutonniere off his lapel and tossing it onto the floor.

Brandon: I'm revoking my consent, Vanessa.

Vanessa: Brandon! No! Please! Think about our house in the Hamptons!

Brandon: I bought that house with my own money, Vanessa. And you will never step foot inside it again.

Sarah: Brandon, please wait... don't destroy your wedding because of an argument.

Brandon: Sarah, look at me.

Sarah looked up into Brandon's eyes, seeing genuine tears forming in his lashes.

Brandon: When I was hooked up to those machines, I couldn't see anything. I was trapped in pitch darkness.

Brandon: But I could hear a soft voice telling me to keep fighting. Telling me my father needed me.

Sarah: I remember. I kept telling you that your dad was waiting in the lobby.

Brandon: That voice was the only thing that kept my heart beating when my organs were shutting down.

Brandon: I spent two months in physical therapy trying to find out who belonged to that voice.

Brandon: I won't spend the rest of my life married to a woman who mocks the very voice that saved me.

The entire room burst into soft applause, guests nodding in agreement with Brandon's words.

Vanessa turned to her bridal party standing behind her on stage.

Vanessa: Girls! Do something! Tell him he's being insane!

Maid of Honor: Vanessa... you went way too far. You've been picking on Sarah all morning in the dressing room.

Vanessa: You're my maid of honor! You're supposed to take my side!

Maid of Honor: I took your side when you were being reasonable. But mocking a trauma nurse is disgusting.

The maid of honor unpinned her bridesmaid corsage and set it gently on the stage chair.

Maid of Honor: I'm going home.

Vanessa: Chloe! Don't you walk away from me!

Two other bridesmaids quickly followed Chloe, leaving Vanessa standing completely alone on the large wooden stage.

Her mother slumped into a nearby chair, burying her face in her hands as she realized the financial disaster unfolding before them.

Mr. Vance: Sarah, my dear, come with us to the main table.

Sarah: Oh, no, Mr. Vance... I don't belong at the head table.

Mr. Vance: You are the guest of honor tonight. Please, do me the favor of sitting beside my family.

Sarah looked at Brandon, who offered her his arm with a warm, gentle smile.

Brandon: Escort me to my table, Nurse Sarah?

Sarah took a deep breath, wiping away her final tears, and placed her hand on Brandon's arm.

Sarah: I would be honored, Brandon.
