A Father's Safe Promise

The dizziness hit Arthur again, but this time, he didn't care. He dropped down to his knees on the cold marble floor.

Arthur: Come here, Lily. Come here right now.

Lily ran across the floor, her small shoes tapping against the marble, and threw her arms around her father's neck.

Lily: Daddy, are you going to die?

Arthur: No, sweetheart. I am not going anywhere. Daddy is going to be just fine.

Arthur embraced the little girl tightly in the sunlit mansion hall, burying his face in her small shoulder as a wave of immense relief washed over him.

Lily: I was so scared when I saw her put the powder in the soup. I thought you would get mad at me for telling.

Arthur: I will never be mad at you for telling the truth, Lily. You saved my life today.

Lily: Will she ever come back to our house?

Arthur: Never. I promise you, she will never set foot on this property again.

Thomas walked back into the hall, carrying a warm glass of fresh, clean water on a new tray.

Thomas: Please drink this, Mr. Arthur. It is straight from the sealed bottled supply. I opened it myself.

Arthur: Thank you, Thomas. You have always been a true friend to this family.

Thomas: We must get you to the hospital, sir, to have your blood tested and flush those sedatives out of your system.

Arthur: Yes. Call the driver. We need to go immediately.

Lily: Can I come with you to the hospital, Daddy?

Arthur: You are never leaving my sight again, little bird. You are coming right with me.

Harrison: Arthur, the police have arrived at the front gate. They want to take the initial statement before you leave for the clinic.

Arthur: Send them in, Harrison. I want this nightmare documented properly so she never sees the outside of a jail cell.

Harrison: The life insurance policy is officially canceled as of this moment, Arthur. The money is safe.

Arthur: Put it all into Lily's name. Every single penny of the trust fund goes into a secure account for her future.

Lily: I don't care about the money, Daddy. I just want you to be healthy.

Arthur: I know you do, sweetheart. That's why you deserve it.

Arthur stood up slowly, his left ear still ringing slightly, but his mind finally clear of the toxic fog that had clouded it for a month.

Arthur: Let's go talk to the officers, Lily. It's time to take our home back.

He held his daughter's small hand firmly in his own as they walked toward the front doors, the bright afternoon sunlight guiding their way into a safe, honest future.
