Stepping Into The Light

Marcus: You arranged movers behind my back? You really thought this through, didn't you?

Clara: When you live with a hurricane, Marcus, you learn to check the weather forecast and prepare your shelter.

Marcus: I hope you realize how hard it's going to be out there on your own without my financial backing.

Clara: I have my own successful marketing career, Marcus. I made six figures before I even met you.

Marcus: My income dwarfs yours, and you know it. You've gotten used to a luxury lifestyle.

Clara: Luxury isn't worth trading away my peace of mind and my self-respect.

Marcus watched her turn away toward the grand foyer, his shoulders slumping in sudden defeat as his final insults fell flat.

Marcus: Clara... is there truly nothing I can say to make you stay?

Clara: The only thing you could say at this point is goodbye, Marcus.

She grabbed her leather handbag from the entryway console, sliding her car keys firmly into her palm.

Marcus: I won't come after you. Once you walk out that door, we are dead to each other.

Clara: Good. That makes two of us.

She pulled open the heavy front door, letting the bright afternoon sunshine flood into the dark, tense entryway of the mansion.

Marcus: Don't look back, Clara! If you leave now, don't ever expect to step foot back in this home!

Clara: I wouldn't dream of it.

She stepped across the threshold, feeling the warm breeze hit her face as the heavy oak door clicked shut behind her with a solid, permanent thud.

Marcus stood alone in the center of the silent luxury hallway, staring down at the sparkling diamond engagement ring still resting on the marble kitchen counter.

The bitter chill of his own making filled the empty rooms around him, leaving him with nothing but the chilling echo of his own unchecked jealousy.

Clara walked down the paved driveway toward her car, her head held high and her breathing steady and deep for the first time in years.

She tossed her bag into the passenger seat, sliding behind the steering wheel as a profound sense of absolute freedom washed over her spirit.

The nightmare was finally over, and the bright open road ahead belonged entirely to her.
