Alex looked down at the fifty-thousand-dollar check in his hand, ripping it into four clean pieces.
He let the paper scraps fall onto Jessica's lace veil spread across the floor.
Alex: You had it all planned out, didn't you, Jessica?
Jessica: Alex... please... I was scared... I didn't want to hurt you...
Alex: You didn't want to hurt me? You wanted to bleed my family's estate dry!
An elderly gentleman in a tailored charcoal suit walked up the center aisle, holding a leather document folder.
It was Mr. Sterling, Alex's family estate lawyer and trust trustee.
Mr. Sterling: Alex, I received your automated security alert on my office phone five minutes ago.
Alex: Is the prenuptial agreement legally voided, Mr. Sterling?
Mr. Sterling: Since the marriage ceremony was never completed and the officiant did not sign the license, no legal union exists.
Jessica: Mr. Sterling! Please tell Alex we can talk about this privately in the office!
Mr. Sterling: Miss Miller, my firm has spent the last forty-eight hours conducting a background check on your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.
Jessica went dead silent, her hands freezing on her face as she looked up at the lawyer.
Jessica: What... what background check?
Mr. Sterling: We discovered three separate wire transfers totaling one hundred and twenty thousand dollars sent from Alex's wedding expense account to a holding firm registered under your mother's maiden name.
Linda: Now wait just a minute! That was for wedding planner fees and floral arrangements!
Mr. Sterling: The floral arrangements cost twelve thousand dollars, Mrs. Miller. The remaining one hundred and eight thousand dollars was wired directly to an online gambling portal in Nassau.
Linda's face turned beet red as the guests around her began murmuring loudly in disgust.
Alex: You and your mother were stealing from my family before we even stood at the altar!
Jessica: Alex, my mother had debts! People were threatening our family home!
Alex: So you decided to make me pay for your mother's gambling addiction?
Jessica: I thought after we were married, you would understand! You have millions of dollars, Alex! What is a hundred thousand to you?!
Alex: It's not about the money, Jessica. It's about trust, honor, and decency!
Alex turned to the minister, who stood near the altar looking completely bewildered.
Alex: Minister, I am officially cancelling this ceremony. There will be no wedding today.
Minister: Understood, Alex. May God grant you strength and peace today.
Jessica stood up from the floor, her white dress covered in dirt and scraps of torn paper.
Jessica: You can't just cancel the wedding! Four hundred people are waiting at the country club reception hall!
Alex: The reception is canceled too, Jessica. I'm calling the venue management right now to lock the doors.
Jessica: We paid eighty thousand dollars non-refundable deposit for that hall!
Alex: Correction: I paid eighty thousand dollars. And my lawyer will be filing a fraud claim to recover every single cent from your mother's estate.
Linda stood up from her seat, clutching her pearl necklace in terror.
Linda: Recover it from my estate?! We don't have any money, Alex!
Mr. Sterling: Then the court will order a judicial lien against your suburban home, Mrs. Miller.
