A Brand New Start

Police Officer: Step down toward the patrol car, please. Our team will handle the situation inside the home.

Clara: Is it really over, Mom?

Evelyn: The legal battle is just starting, but the hard part is over. They can't touch you or control you ever again.

Clara: What about father's inheritance and the trust fund?

Evelyn: The estate will be placed under court guardianship until the fraud investigation clears. Whatever your father truly wanted for you, you will receive in due time.

Clara looked back one last time as two police officers escorted Victoria out of the front doors in handcuffs. Victoria's proud posture was completely gone, replaced by a defeated slump as the reality of her actions hit her. Julian followed behind, speaking feverishly into his cell phone, trying desperately to salvage whatever remained of his ruined reputation.

Clara: I don't even care about the money or the estate anymore, Mom. I just wanted my freedom back.

Evelyn: And you have it now. We both do.

Clara: Where do we go from here?

Evelyn: We go home to our small apartment and rebuild our lives together.

They sat in the back of the police transport vehicle as it pulled away from the gates of the massive estate. Clara wrapped her silk robe tightly around herself, feeling the warmth of her mother's arm around her shoulders. For the first time in months, the future didn't feel like a terrifying unknown—it felt like a clean slate.

Clara: Mom?

Evelyn: Yes, honey?

Clara: Thank you for coming back for me today.

Evelyn: I never left you, Clara. And I never will.

As the iron gates of the estate closed behind them forever, Clara closed her eyes, letting the quiet rhythm of the road carry them far away from the gold-trimmed cage they left in ruins.

Clara: We're going to be okay, aren't we?

Evelyn: We're going to be better than okay. We have our truth, and nobody can ever buy that from us again.
