The night air turned freezing cold as heavy rain began to pour over the city streets.
Julian and Evelyn trudged down the sidewalk, their expensive clothes completely soaked through with muddy water.
Evelyn's high heels had snapped half a mile back, forcing her to limp barefoot along the wet pavement.
Evelyn: My feet are bleeding, Julian! I can't walk another step!
Julian: Keep moving, Mom! We're almost at her apartment building!
Evelyn: Why did you have to slap her so hard?! You ruined everything!
Julian: You told me to do it, Mom! You said a woman needs to respect her mother-in-law!
Evelyn: I didn't know she was worth billions!
They finally reached the glass doors of Clara's high-rise apartment building, dripping wet and shivering uncontrollably.
Julian rushed up to the front desk, pounding on the glass.
Julian: Open up! Let us in! I need to see Clara Miller!
The security guard behind the desk looked up calmly, adjusting his suit jacket before pressing the intercom button.
Security Guard: Sir, there is no Clara Miller in this building.
Julian: Yes, there is! Apartment 12B! She lives right there!
Security Guard: Miss Clara Vance owns the entire building, sir. And you are on her strict do-not-admit list.
Julian: I'm her fiancé! Look at me! I'm Julian Vance!
Security Guard: I know who you are, Mr. Vance. Miss Vance instructed me to hand you this document if you showed up.
The guard slid a thick white envelope through the mail slot in the glass door.
Julian snatched it with shaking, wet hands, ripping it open instantly.
Inside was a single piece of paper bearing the official seal of Vance Global Holdings.
Evelyn: What does it say, Julian?! What does it say?!
Julian read the bold letters at the top of the page, his voice cracking with sheer panic.
Julian:Notice of Total Asset Foreclosure and Immediate Eviction...
Evelyn: Eviction?! From our own mansion?!
Julian: It says we have twelve hours to pack our personal belongings before the sheriff seals the property.
Evelyn: No! No, she can't do this to us! We are high-society people!
Julian: Clara! Clara, please look out the window!
Julian turned toward the street, looking up at the towering glass building, screaming at the top of his lungs into the rain.
Julian: Clara! I'm sorry! I was wrong! I love you!
Passersby stopped to stare at the disheveled man in a ruined tuxedo crying on the sidewalk alongside an old woman in a soaked evening gown.
Up on the twelfth floor, Clara stood behind the floor-to-ceiling glass window, holding a warm cup of tea.
She watched the tiny figures of Julian and his mother flailing helplessly on the street below.
Sarah: Miss Vance? Should I have security clear them off the property?
Clara: Let them stay out there in the rain for a little longer, Sarah. It builds character.
Sarah: Your divorce lawyer is on line two. He has the paperwork ready for the pre-nuptial termination.
Clara: Tell him to process it immediately. I want every single agreement severed by morning.
