By nine o'clock the next morning, the grand boardroom of Vance Global Holdings was filled with corporate executives and legal representatives.
Julian sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, wearing a borrowed suit that was two sizes too big. His eyes were bloodshot, and his knuckles were raw.
Evelyn sat beside him, her hair pulled back tightly, looking smaller and older than she ever had before.
The double doors swung open, and Clara stepped into the room.
She wore a tailored navy business suit, her dark hair pinned up with effortless grace. Her face was calm, powerful, and completely unreadable.
The entire board of directors stood up immediately, bowing their heads respectfully.
Board Member 1: Good morning, Miss Vance.
Clara: Please, take your seats, everyone.
Clara sat at the head of the table, setting her leather folder down with a sharp click.
Julian leaned forward, his hands clasped together in a desperate plea.
Julian: Clara... please. Let us speak in private. Just five minutes, please.
Clara: Mr. Vance, this is a formal board hearing regarding your firm's default on forty-two million dollars in debt. There are no private conversations here.
Evelyn: Clara, child, please understand! Yesterday was a terrible misunderstanding! I was under so much stress—
Clara raised one hand slightly, and Evelyn stopped speaking instantly.
Clara: Mrs. Vance, yesterday you informed me that I had no right to speak in your home. Today, you are in my boardroom. You will speak only when spoken to.
Evelyn bit her lip, her face flushing crimson as the board members whispered among themselves.
Clara: Sarah, read the terms of the default settlement.
Sarah stood up, pulling a legal document from her briefcase.
Sarah: As of 8:00 AM today, Vance Global Holdings has officially seized the Vance Group's headquarters, all subsidiary assets, and the residential estate located at 404 Crestview Drive.
Julian: Clara, you're taking my company?! I built that firm from the ground up!
Clara: You built it using a forty-million-dollar loan from my father's trust fund, Julian. A loan you defaulted on three months ago while hiding the balance sheets from your shareholders.
Julian: I was going to pay it back! I just needed more time!
Clara: You didn't spend that money on your business, Julian. You spent it on sports cars, country club memberships, and your mother's diamond jewelry.
She slid a stack of bank receipts across the table toward him.
Clara: Page three shows a two-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer to your mother's personal account last Tuesday. Is that where my trust fund money went?
Julian stared down at the paper, unable to utter a single word.
Evelyn: That was for my medical treatments! I have a delicate heart condition!
Clara: Your medical receipts show those funds were spent at a luxury spa in Miami, Evelyn. Don't lie to me again.
