A Stolen Legacy

Clara: Drink some of this chamomile tea, Eleanor. Take your time.

Eleanor: Thank you, Clara. You have your grandmother's kind heart.

Clara: My grandmother always told me that true elegance comes from honesty and hard work, not money.

Eleanor: Rose was always the brave one. She stood up to Charles Croft when no one else dared to speak.

Clara: When my grandmother passed away three years ago, she left me this boutique and her private legal archives.

Eleanor: Did she keep the old contracts from the seventies?

Clara: She kept everything, Eleanor! Boxes of letters, financial receipts, and original patent filings!

The heavy glass front door of the boutique suddenly pushed open, the bell above it ringing loudly across the marble floor.

Gregory Croft marched back into the store, flanked by a tall man in a navy suit holding a black leather briefcase.

Gregory: There she is, Arthur! That's the woman who assaulted me!

Arthur: Good afternoon. I am Arthur Vance, lead legal counsel for Croft Investment Holdings.

Clara: I told you to get out of my boutique, Gregory.

Arthur: Miss Sterling, my client is prepared to press full criminal charges against you for battery unless you sign this immediate eviction settlement.

Clara: Eviction settlement? On what grounds?

Arthur: Violation of commercial building safety standards and unprovoked physical violence against a property representative.

Gregory: You have twenty-four hours to vacate these premises, Clara! Every dress in this shop will be seized to pay for my damages!

Eleanor: You can't take her shop! She did nothing wrong!

Gregory: Shut your mouth, old woman! Nobody asked for your input!

Clara: Don't you dare speak to her like that in my presence!

Arthur: Miss Sterling, if you sign this paper right now, Mr. Croft will decline to call the police department.

Clara: Hand me that clipboard, Arthur.

Arthur smiled smugly, handing the white paper and a silver pen across the counter to Clara.

Clara took the paper, looked Gregory straight in the eyes, and slowly tore the document into four clean pieces before tossing them onto the floor.

Gregory: Are you out of your mind?!

Clara: I am not signing anything, Gregory. In fact, you just made the biggest mistake of your life entering my store today.

Arthur: Miss Sterling, this is a legally binding notice—

Clara: That notice is garbage! My lawyer, Sarah Jenkins, is already on her way here with a federal subpoena!

Gregory: A subpoena for what?!

Clara: For forty years of copyright infringement, fraud, and illegal asset seizure committed by Croft Investment Holdings against Eleanor Morrow!

Gregory's smug expression instantly vanished, his face turning pale under the bright boutique lighting.

Gregory: Eleanor Morrow? Who told you that name?!

Clara: She's sitting right here on my sofa, Gregory. The woman your father robbed and exiled forty years ago!

Gregory: That's ancient history! The statute of limitations expired decades ago!

Clara: Not when fraud involves active, ongoing commercial sales using forged design patents, Gregory!

Arthur: Gregory... what is she talking about?

Gregory: She's making up stories, Arthur! Get her out of here!

Clara: Show them the door, Eleanor. Our legal team will handle the rest in court tomorrow morning!
