The Threat At The Door

Sarah: Everyone stay right where you are.

A sharp-dressed woman in a grey pinstripe suit stepped through the front door, holding a thick red folder in her hand.

Clara: Sarah! Thank goodness you got here so quickly.

Sarah: I brought the injunction paperwork straight from the county courthouse, Clara.

Arthur: Sarah Jenkins? What are you doing here?

Sarah: Protecting my client from illegal extortion and corporate harassment, Arthur.

Gregory: This is a private landlord dispute, Sarah! You have no standing here!

Sarah: Actually, Gregory, I represent both Sterling Atelier and Mrs. Eleanor Morrow as co-plaintiffs in a new federal suit filed two hours ago.

Gregory: Two hours ago?! You can't file a federal suit that fast!

Sarah: When evidence involves forty years of systemic trade secret theft and tax evasion through offshore accounts, federal judges act very quickly.

Arthur: Offshore accounts? What offshore accounts?

Sarah: Pages twelve through thirty of this audit report show that Croft Investment Holdings has been licensing Eleanor Morrow's original vintage dress patterns through a shell company in Panama.

Eleanor: Panama? I've never even been to Panama!

Sarah: Exactly, Mrs. Morrow. Charles Croft forged your signature on a master transfer agreement in 1984 and deposited twenty-five million dollars in royalties into his private account.

Gregory took a nervous step back toward the door, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.

Gregory: My father handled those contracts! I had nothing to do with decisions made in 1984!

Sarah: But you signed the annual renewal forms last month, didn't you, Gregory?

Gregory: I... I just signed what the accountants gave me!

Sarah: Ignorance of the law is not a defense for grand theft, Mr. Croft.

Clara: You came into my store today calling an elderly woman dirty and worthless, Gregory.

Clara: You thought she was weak because she carried a wooden cane and wore simple clothes.

Eleanor: I may be old, young man, but my memory is sharp as a needle.

Gregory: Arthur, do something! Tell them we're going to fight this!

Arthur: Gregory... if these patent transfer signatures are proven to be forged, I cannot represent you in court. That would be a direct conflict of interest.

Gregory: You're my corporate lawyer! I pay your salary!

Arthur: I represent Croft Holdings, Gregory, not your personal criminal activities. I advise you to retain a private defense lawyer immediately.

Arthur closed his leather briefcase, gave a brief nod to Sarah Jenkins, and walked out of the store without looking back at his client.

Gregory: Arthur! Come back here! You can't leave me alone with them!

Clara: You're not alone, Gregory. You have the federal marshals coming to visit your office at five o'clock!

Gregory: You ruined everything, you little brat!

Clara: You ruined yourself forty minutes ago when you put your hands on my grandmother's best friend!

Gregory glared at Clara with pure hatred, but the cold authority in her eyes forced him to turn around and flee through the glass doors into the bright afternoon sun.
