The bright daylight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the residence, casting harsh reflections off the polished wooden floorboards. Clara lay helpless on the bottom step of the grand staircase, her beige satin blouse torn at the shoulder. Her face was pale with agony, and her left leg twisted at an unnatural angle. David stood over her in his crisp navy suit, looking down at her with complete contempt.
David: Look at you. You're completely pathetic, Clara.
Clara: David, please... my leg is broken. I need an ambulance.
David: An ambulance? Do you have any idea how much bad publicity that brings?
Clara: I can't move! The pain is unbearable!
David: NOBODY IS COMING TO HELP YOU!
Small footfalls echoed down the upper hallway as seven-year-old Lily ran to the top of the stairs. She clutched a cordless phone in her small, trembling hands, her eyes wide with terror as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Lily: GRANDPA, HELP US! HE BROKE MOM'S LEG!
David: Give me that phone, you little brat!
Before David could reach the stairs, his mother, Evelyn, stepped out from the formal dining room. She wore an expensive dark lace dress and held a half-filled wine glass, her eyes cold and calculating as she stared down at her injured daughter-in-law.
Evelyn: SHUT UP AND SAY YOU SLIPPED! NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU!
Clara: Evelyn... please, she's just a child...
Evelyn: She's a child who needs to learn her place, just like you!
David: Put the phone down right now, Lily, or I swear you'll join your mother on the floor!
Lily backed away, pressing the phone tight against her ear, sobbing into the receiver as she begged her grandfather to hurry. David took a threatening step up the stairs, raising his hand toward the young girl. But before his fingers could touch her, the heavy front door burst open with a deafening crash, letting in a gust of afternoon wind and the commanding presence of a man they thought was thousands of miles away.
