The Final Justice

One year later, the gates of the Federal Correctional Institution in El Paso opened briefly under the hot desert sun. A line of inmates in grey uniforms walked in single file across the dusty yard toward the work detail area.

Among them was David, his hands rough and calloused, carrying a heavy box of tools toward the maintenance shed. His former life of luxury suits, fine dining, and executive offices felt like a distant, faded nightmare.

Inmate Foreman: Keep moving, Vance! Nobody gets a break until these pipes are fixed!

David: Yes, sir. Moving now.

David wiped sweat from his forehead with his sleeve, pausing for a moment to glance up at the guard tower. In the corner of the yard, a small television mounted inside the visitor waiting area played a news broadcast on low volume.

A reporter stood on the steps of a newly opened community center in Dallas.

TV Reporter: Today marks the official opening of the Vance Foundation Recovery Center, funded entirely by philanthropist Clara Sterling and her father, General Arthur Vance...

David stared at the screen through the chain-link fence, watching Clara stand behind the podium in a stunning navy blazer, surrounded by supportive friends, city officials, and a smiling, healthy Lily.

Inmate Foreman: Hey! Vance! Did you hear me?! Get back to work!

David: I'm going... I'm going...

David picked up the heavy tool box, lowering his head as he shuffled forward across the gravel. He remembered the words he had screamed at Clara on the stairs that fateful afternoon: "Nobody is coming to help you."

He realized now how utterly wrong he had been. Help had come, justice had prevailed, and he was left with nothing but the bitter weight of his own cruelty for the rest of his days.
