The bright daylight shone through the high windows of the grand dining hall, casting a glow over the long dark wood table. Clara sat in her simple black dress, her hands resting quietly in her lap. Opposite her, Mark leaned over the mahogany table, his black suit rumpled as he pointed an angry finger at her face.
Mark: GIVE THE APARTMENT TO MY MOTHER OR LEAVE THIS FAMILY!
Clara: MY HOME IS NOT YOURS TO GIVE AWAY.
Mark: You don't have a choice in this! My mother needs a permanent residence, and your downtown apartment is empty!
Clara: It's empty because I bought it with my own hard-earned money long before I met you, Mark.
Evelyn: How dare you talk to my son like that! You belong to this family now, Clara, and everything you own belongs to us!
Mark: You heard my mother! Sign the deed transfer today, or get out of this house!
Clara's eyes narrowed, cold and composed amidst the rising voices of the room. She slowly placed both hands against the heavy edge of the dark wood table.
Clara: You think you can intimidate me in front of your whole family?
In a sudden, explosive burst of rage, Clara leaped up and yanked the edge of the dining table upward with all her strength. The massive dark wood table flipped completely over, sending crystal glasses, porcelain plates, and fine dining cutlery smashing onto the marble floor with a deafening crash.
Family members gasped in terror, scrambling backward as food and shattered glass rained down across the room.
Before Mark could react, Clara leaped over the broken wood and stepped directly into his space. She swung her arm back with full force and slapped Mark hard across the face with a sharp, violent crack.
Mark stumbled back in utter shock, clutching his reddened cheek as his eyes went wide with disbelief.
Mark: YOU SLAPPED ME?!
Clara: That was for shouting at me in my own home.
Clara turned calmly toward the side table, picked up her smartphone, and held it to her ear.
Clara: MY HUSBAND ATTACKED ME. THERE ARE 20 WITNESSES IN THIS ROOM.
Evelyn: HANG UP! IT WAS ONLY A FAMILY ARGUMENT!
Clara turned away without another word, holding the phone firmly against her ear as she walked down the sunlit hall, leaving her panicked husband and his shocked family standing in total ruin.
