A Visit From Evelyn

Later that afternoon, Clara was stepping out of her building's lobby on her way to a luncheon when a woman rushed forward from behind the courtyard fountain.

Evelyn looked disheveled, her expensive hair unkempt, wearing a simple cardigan that looked completely out of place on her usually immaculate frame.

Evelyn: Clara! Clara, please! Just give me two minutes!

Two building security guards immediately moved into position, stepping between Evelyn and Clara.

Security Guard: Ma'am, stand back. You are violating a civil protection order.

Clara: It's fine, Marcus. Let her speak from there.

Evelyn: Clara, look at me! I'm begging you! Talk to your father!

Clara: Why should I talk to my father, Evelyn?

Evelyn: The bank is repossessing the mansion next Tuesday! They gave us five days to pack our belongings and leave!

Clara: That is between you and the bank's foreclosure department, Evelyn.

Evelyn: We have nowhere to go! Mark is staying in a cheap motel near the highway, and his trial date is set for next month!

Clara: Mark made his choices when he put his hands on me and demanded I give up my mother's home.

Evelyn: He was desperate! He was trying to save our family from financial ruin!

Clara: He wasn't trying to save the family, Evelyn. He was trying to rob me so he could keep buying luxury cars and yachts.

Evelyn: I am an old woman, Clara! You can't let them put me out on the street!

Clara: You were more than happy to put me out on the street three days ago when you told me to sign over my apartment or leave the family.

Evelyn froze, her mouth opening slightly as the memory of her own words in the dining hall hit her like a cold wave.

Clara: You told me my mother's memory meant nothing and that I belonged on my knees serving your interests.

Evelyn: I was wrong... I'm sorry! Please, Clara!

Clara: Apologies don't fix six months of emotional abuse and extortion, Evelyn. Good day.

Clara turned on her heel and walked down the sunlit sidewalk toward her awaiting car, leaving Evelyn crying helplessly on the pavement under the watchful eyes of the security team.
