Police In The Hallway

Officer Davis: Ma'am, are you the one who placed the 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance?

Clara: Yes, Officer. My husband, Mark Sterling, grabbed my wrists forcefully and threatened me inside the house.

Mark: Officer, this is a family dispute! She flipped our dining table and slapped me in the face!

Officer Davis: Sir, step back and keep your hands where I can see them.

Mark: Look at my cheek! It's bright red! She struck me first!

Clara: I slapped him in self-defense after he cornered me and demanded I sign over my personal property deeds under threat of physical expulsion.

Evelyn: That is a lie! Nobody threatened her!

Arthur: Evelyn, I suggest you choose your next words very carefully. Everything being said in this foyer is being recorded on my security team's lapel cameras.

Evelyn froze, her eyes dropping to the small black lenses mounted on the suits of the two large men standing behind Arthur.

Evelyn: Mr. Vance... please. This is all a tragic misunderstanding between newlyweds.

Arthur: My daughter was married for six months to a man who tried to extort her for her mother's memory. There is no misunderstanding here.

Officer Davis: Mr. Sterling, turn around and place your hands behind your back.

Mark: What?! You're arresting ME?! She's the one who flipped the table!

Officer Davis: We have a reported domestic assault with visible red marks on the victim's arms. Turn around, sir.

Mark turned slowly, his head hanging low as the officer clicked cold steel handcuffs around his wrists in front of his entire family.

Evelyn: Mark! Oh my God, Mark!

Mark: Mother, call Mr. Vance! Call our lawyer!

Arthur: Your corporate lawyer, Mr. Vance, happens to be on my payroll as outside counsel, Mark. He won't be picking up your calls today.

Mark: Clara! Please! Don't let them do this! I'm your husband!

Clara: You were my husband, Mark. My lawyer filed the emergency divorce petition twenty minutes before I flipped that table.

Mark stared at her in utter disbelief as the officers guided him toward the front doors and out onto the sunlit driveway.

Evelyn fell back against the stair railing, clutching her chest as Arthur stepped closer to her.

Arthur: As for you, Evelyn, First National Bank will be issuing a formal default notice on your commercial loans by five o'clock today.

Evelyn: Mr. Vance... please... that will ruin us! We'll lose the estate!

Arthur: Then I suggest you start packing your bags. My daughter's apartment was never yours to take, but this mansion will belong to the bank by the end of the month.
