The heavy front door slammed open, bouncing hard against the hallway wall as Rachel rushed into the sunlit living room.
Her heart stopped in her chest when she saw her mother-in-law, Evelyn, standing over seven-year-old Lily with a heavy wooden chair tilted in her hands.
Rachel: WHAT THE HELL DID YOU JUST DO TO MY DAUGHTER, YOU EVIL MONSTER?!
Evelyn raised her head, her face twisted into an arrogant glare as she tossed the chair aside onto the light beige rug.
Evelyn: SHUT UP! SHE NEEDS TO KNOW HER PLACE!
Rachel: She is a seven-year-old child! Are you insane?!
Rachel sprinted across the room, dropping to her knees on the hard floor to pull her crying daughter into a tight, protective embrace.
Lily buried her tear-stained face into Rachel’s striped sweater, her tiny hands clutching her mother’s arm with terrified force.
Lily: MOMMY, SHE HIT ME WITH THE CHAIR! IT HURTS SO MUCH!
Rachel: I’ve got you, baby. I’m right here. Shh, Mommy’s got you.
Evelyn: Stop coddling that spoiled little brat! She broke my antique porcelain vase!
Rachel: A vase?! You hit my child with wooden furniture over a piece of ceramic?!
Before Rachel could stand up, her father-in-law, Richard, strode aggressively into the living room, kicking a wooden dining chair out of his path.
Richard: STOP STRUGGLING AND MAKING A FUSS! DON'T BRING SHAME TO THIS FAMILY!
Rachel: Shame?! You stand there and watch your wife abuse a little girl, and you talk about shame?!
A sudden, searing rage exploded inside Rachel’s chest as she leaped to her feet, stepping directly in front of Evelyn.
With full force, Rachel swung her arm back and slapped Evelyn hard across the face with a loud, ringing crack.
Evelyn stumbled backward into the sofa cushion, clutching her stinging, reddened cheek in total shock.
Evelyn: YOU SLAPPED ME?!
Rachel: YOU CANNOT HIT AN OLD MAN OR MY DAUGHTER! NO ONE LEAVES UNTIL THE POLICE ARRIVE!
Rachel pulled out her smartphone with uncompromising determination, her thumb hovering over the emergency dial pad as Evelyn and Richard stood completely frozen in horror.
