Mark: What are you talking about, Rachel? Lily’s trust fund was set up by my late grandfather!
Rachel: Yes, it was, Mark. Your grandfather left two million dollars in a trust account specifically for Lily’s future education and medical care.
Richard: That is confidential family business! You had no right to look at those papers!
Police Officer 1: Hold on a second, sir. Ma'am, what did you find in that ledger?
Rachel: I found withdrawal statements dating back five years. Over eight hundred thousand dollars has been drained from Lily’s account.
Evelyn: We used that money to maintain the estate! We are the guardians of that trust!
Rachel: The trust charter states clearly that no funds can be withdrawn without court authorization until Lily turns eighteen!
Mark stepped closer to his father, his chest heaving with deep, ragged breaths of disbelief.
Mark: Dad... did you steal from your own granddaughter’s trust fund?
Richard: We didn't steal anything! The firm was going through a cash flow crisis during the market crash!
Mark: You bought a yacht last spring, Dad! You bought a brand new luxury SUV for Mom!
Evelyn: We deserve to live comfortably! We built this family’s reputation!
Mark: You built a reputation on fraud and abuse!
The second police officer called into his radio, requesting an investigator from the financial crimes unit.
Police Officer 2: Dispatch, we have a domestic assault with potential grand larceny and embezzlement at 412 Crestview Drive. Requesting Detective Miller on scene.
Richard: Embezzlement?! This is an internal family matter! You can't involve federal auditors!
Police Officer 1: Sir, siphoning trust funds established for a minor is a federal felony.
Evelyn began to cry hysterically as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
Evelyn: Mark! Tell them to take these off! My wrist hurts! I am an old woman!
Rachel: You didn't care when my seven-year-old daughter said her shoulder hurt, Evelyn.
Evelyn: You terrible, wicked girl! You ruined my life!
Rachel: You ruined your own life the second you thought money made you invincible.
The paramedics carefully lifted Lily onto a mobile stretcher, securing her with soft padded straps.
Paramedic: We’re heading to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital now, folks. One parent can ride in the back with us.
Rachel: I’m coming with her. Mark, stay here with the police and show them where the wall safe is.
Mark: I will, Rachel. I’m going to hand over every single document they need.
Richard sank down onto the wooden chair, burying his head in his hands as the police officers led his weeping wife out the front door.
