The Secret In The Safe

Richard: You quit?! Have you lost your mind, Mark? You have a mortgage! You have private school bills!

Mark: I’d rather work at a gas station than take another dollar of your dirty money!

The front door opened, and two uniformed police officers walked into the foyer alongside two paramedics carrying medical bags.

Police Officer 1: We received an emergency report of an assault on a child. Who called 911?

Rachel: I did, officer. My daughter was attacked by her grandmother with that wooden chair over there.

The paramedic immediately knelt beside Lily, opening his kit to inspect the bruising on her shoulder.

Paramedic: Sweetie, I’m going to press gently right here. Tell me if it hurts, okay?

Lily: Ow... yes, it hurts a lot...

Paramedic: We need to take her to the emergency room for an X-ray, ma'am. There might be a hairline fracture in the collarbone.

Rachel felt her stomach drop into a dark, icy pit as tears streamed down her face.

Rachel: A fracture?! Oh, God... my poor baby...

Police Officer 1: Ma'am, step over here, please. Who is Evelyn Vance?

Evelyn raised her chin arrogantly, though her hands were trembling behind her back.

Evelyn: I am Evelyn Vance. And this is my private residence! These people are trespassing!

Police Officer 2: Ma'am, your son and daughter-in-law live on this property according to the estate registry.

Richard: Officer, I am Richard Vance, senior partner at Vance & Associates law firm. My wife was simply disciplining our granddaughter.

Police Officer 1: Sir, hit-marks from heavy wooden furniture do not qualify as discipline under state law.

Evelyn: She broke an antique! She insulted my family lineage!

Police Officer 2: Ma'am, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court.

The officer pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs, stepping toward Evelyn as she gasped in sheer horror.

Evelyn: Handcuffs?! You are puting handcuffs on ME?! Richard, do something!

Richard: Officer, wait! You don't know the full story here! Rachel has been trying to steal our estate trust fund for years!

Rachel wiped her tears, stepping forward with her phone held high.

Rachel: Estate trust fund? Richard, do you want me to show the police what’s inside your private wall safe upstairs?

Richard’s face instantly went dead gray, his jaw dropping open in utter disbelief.

Richard: How... how do you know about the wall safe?

Rachel: Because when I was cleaning your study last month, I found the hidden ledger you hid behind the painting.

Mark: Rachel... what ledger?

Rachel: The ledger showing that Richard and Evelyn have been stealing from Lily’s inheritance fund since the day she was born.
