In a federal holding facility upstate, Tiffany sat on a narrow bunk bed wearing a faded orange jumpsuit. The loud clang of sliding metal doors echoed down the long concrete hallway.
Guards: Mail call. Vance, you have a letter.
A guard passed a thin white envelope through the slot in her cell door. Tiffany picked it up with shaking hands. The return address read: *Sterling Corporate Headquarters, Floor 54.*
With trembling fingers, she tore open the paper. Inside was a single printed document with a official embossed gold seal at the bottom.
It was a copy of the company's annual report. On the front page was a photo of Evelyn Sterling, standing proudly in the high-rise lounge surrounded by smiling employees.
Beneath the photo was a short handwritten note from Evelyn herself:
"True authority doesn't come from cruelty, Tiffany. It comes from respect. I hope six years gives you enough time to learn the difference."
Tiffany clutched the paper to her chest, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. There were no designer dresses, no four-million-dollar stock options, and no family status left to save her.
She sat down on her rough mattress, listening to the heavy iron doors slam shut down the hall.
Back in the Manhattan high-rise, Evelyn closed her laptop and stood up from her granite desk. She picked up her simple grey suit jacket from the coat rack and slipped it over her shoulders.
Richard: Headed out for the evening, Miss Sterling?
Evelyn: Yes, Richard. Everything is running smoothly here.
Richard: Have a good weekend. You've earned it.
Evelyn walked out of her office and into the lounge. She paused by the marble counter, looking at the exact spot where Tiffany had splashed water into her face three months ago.
She smiled softly, adjusted her lapels, and stepped into the elevator, completely victorious.
