The Emergency Room Bay

The bright LED lights of Trauma Bay Four illuminated the stainless steel instruments laid out on the trays.

Nurse Sarah gently cut away the lower leg of Lily’s jeans, revealing a swollen red bruise and a deep gash along her shinbone.

Lily: Uncle Michael... it hurts when she touches it!

Dr. Michael: I know, sweetie. You’re being so brave. Nurse Sarah is just going to put some cool liquid on it to make the pain go away.

Arthur sat on a plastic stool beside the gurney, holding his granddaughter’s small hand while his own body continued to tremble from the confrontation.

Arthur: I’m so sorry, Michael. I didn't mean to cause a scene in your hospital. I didn't know where else to take her.

Dr. Michael: Dad, stop apologizing. You did the exact right thing coming here. Why didn't you call my personal phone line?

Arthur: My cell phone service was shut off yesterday, son. I couldn't pay the monthly bill after my house insurance rate doubled.

Michael paused, his hands freezing over the sterile bandage package as he looked at his father’s worn coat and cracked shoes.

Dr. Michael: Your phone service was shut off? Dad, why didn't you tell me you were struggling with your monthly bills?

Arthur: You work fourteen-hour shifts saving lives, Michael. You have your own family, your own mortgage, your own career. I didn't want to be a financial burden to you.

Dr. Michael: You raised me by yourself on a factory worker’s salary after Mom passed away! You spent your life savings to send me to medical school! You could never be a burden to me!

Nurse Sarah finished applying the antiseptic wipe and secured a temporary splint around Lily’s lower leg.

Nurse Sarah: Dr. Vance, the X-ray team is ready. The preliminary view shows a clean fracture in the tibia. No surgery required, just a cast and rest.

Dr. Michael: Thank God. Get her a dose of pediatric pain reliever and prepare a fiberglass cast room.

Nurse Sarah: Understood, doctor. I’ll bring the paperwork for the guardian signature.

As Sarah walked out, a middle-aged man in a tailored charcoal suit walked into the room holding an iPad.

It was Donald Croft, the regional administrator of Saint Jude Hospital Network.

Donald: Dr. Vance, I just heard about the disturbance in the lobby with Officer Miller. We need to discuss hospital policy in my office immediately.

Dr. Michael: Policy? A security guard you hired just physically barred a injured child from receiving emergency care, Donald!

Donald: Officer Miller was simply enforcing our network’s directives regarding uncompensated care risks. We lost two million dollars last quarter on uninsured emergency visits.

Arthur: Sir, I offered to pay whatever I had in my wallet! I wasn't trying to steal anything!

Donald: With all due respect, sir, twenty dollars doesn't cover the cost of a single sterile bandage in this facility. Dr. Vance, you cannot fire security personnel without administrative approval.

Michael stood up from the stool, walking up to the administrator until they were standing eye-to-eye.

Dr. Michael: He isn't just fired from my department, Donald. I am filing a formal complaint with the state medical ethics board against this entire administration.
