By four o'clock that afternoon, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a warm golden light across the hospital entrance lobby.
Lily sat happily in a brand new wheelchair, showing off her bright pink glitter cast to the desk nurses who brought her a stuffed teddy bear.
Arthur stood beside the counter, holding a steaming cup of coffee in a fresh, clean winter jacket that Michael had ordered from the gift shop upstairs.
Lily: Look, Grandpa! The nurse gave me a teddy bear named Pinky!
Arthur: That’s wonderful, sweetie! Look how nice everyone is treating you now.
Michael walked out of the elevator bank, holding a signed copy of the new hospital protocol documents in his hand.
Arthur: How did the meeting go, son?
Dr. Michael: Donald Croft is gone, Dad. The new policy is signed, sealed, and posted at the front desk. No patient will ever be turned away at those doors again.
Arthur: You did a great thing today, Michael. Your mother would be so proud of the man and doctor you’ve become.
Michael smiled warmly, kneeling down beside Lily’s wheelchair to adjust her blanket.
Dr. Michael: Come on, guys. My shift is over for the rest of the week. I’m taking you both home to my house.
Lily: Are we going to have pizza for dinner, Uncle Michael?
Dr. Michael: Whatever you want, Lily! Pizza, ice cream, and movies all weekend long!
Arthur placed his hand on his son’s shoulder, looking back one last time at the bright, welcoming hospital lobby.
Arthur: Thank you, son. For everything.
Dr. Michael: You saved my life when I was growing up, Dad. Now it’s my turn to take care of you.
Together, they walked out into the warm afternoon sunshine, knowing that their family was safe, secure, and protected forever.
