A New Beginning For The Estate

Julian walked over to the side table, picked up the glass Victoria had poured the vial into, and carefully set it inside a clear plastic bag provided by his security team.

Julian: I'm going to make sure the police test this liquid immediately. Arthur and Victoria will spend a very long time behind bars.

Claire: What are you going to do about the guests in the ballroom?

Julian: I'm going to walk inside, thank everyone for coming, and announce that the party is over. Then I'm going to clean up this house from top to bottom.

Julian looked at Claire's simple waitress uniform, then at her tired, honest eyes.

Julian: How long have you worked for the catering company, Claire?

Claire: About six months. I work night shifts here and study business administration at the state college during the day.

Julian: Business administration?

Claire: Yes. I want to run my own estate management firm one day.

Julian smiled for the first time all evening, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes.

Julian: You don't need to wait until graduation for that, Claire. As of tonight, my uncle Arthur is no longer the estate manager or trustee of Vance Enterprises.

Claire blinked in surprise, holding the silk handkerchief against her forehead.

Claire: What are you saying, Julian?

Julian: I'm saying I need an honest, observant, and courageous assistant manager to oversee my estate operations starting tomorrow morning.

Claire: Julian... I'm just a student. I don't have corporate experience.

Julian: You have something far more valuable than corporate experience, Claire. You have integrity. You can't teach that in a business school.

Claire looked down at the hardwood oak floor, then back up at Julian, her eyes shining with quiet hope.

Claire: The salary would cover my college tuition?

Julian: The salary will cover your tuition, your housing, and full health benefits. And you will never have to serve drinks at a party in this house again.

Claire let out a long, breathless laugh, wiping a tear of relief from her eye.

Claire: Then I accept, Julian. I accept the position.

Julian: Good. Now, let's get you some ice for that scratch, and then we'll tell the ballroom guests that the Vance family is starting over under new management.

Julian offered his arm to Claire, and together they walked down the brightly lit hallway toward the mansion doors. The dark shadow of betrayal was finally lifted, replaced by truth, justice, and the promise of a honest future.
