The Shadow of Five Years

Ryan: Emily, please look at me. Tell me I'm not dreaming.

Emily: You don't get to do this, Ryan. You don't get to show up after five years and act like a father.

Ryan: I didn't know! I swear on my life, I had no idea you were pregnant when I left!

Emily: Because you didn't stay long enough to find out!

Emily grabbed Leo and Toby by their hands, stepping back out of his reach. The boys looked between their mother and the crying man in the navy suit, their small faces filled with confusion.

Toby: Mom, why is he crying?

Emily: Get in the car, boys. Right now.

Ryan: Emily, wait! Please don't walk away from me again. Give me five minutes. Just five minutes to explain.

Emily: You took five years from us, Ryan. Five whole years where I had to raise three babies completely alone!

Ryan: I thought you hated me! I thought you wanted nothing to do with me after what happened at the firm!

Emily let out a sharp, bitter laugh as the driver opened the trunk to load their luggage.

Emily: The firm? You think this was about your corporate promotion?

Ryan: Arthur told me you accepted a settlement from my father to leave town!

Emily's eyes widened in total shock. She stopped in front of the open car door, her knuckles turning white around her purse strap.

Emily: Arthur told you what?

Ryan: My uncle Arthur... he showed me a signed check with your signature on it five years ago. He said you took two hundred thousand dollars to end our engagement and disappear!

Emily: That is a complete lie!

Ryan: What?

Emily: I never took a dime from your family, Ryan! Your uncle threatened to strip my family's mortgage if I didn't leave the city!

Ryan: He threatened your mortgage?

Emily: He told me you were getting married to Victoria to save the family business, and that I was just a distraction to your corporate future!

Ryan stood frozen under the glaring airport lights, his mouth slightly open as the puzzle pieces of his broken past fell into place.

Ryan: Victoria? I never married Victoria! I broke off the engagement the day Arthur showed me that fake check!

Emily: You... you didn't marry her?

Ryan: I haven't touched a woman in five years, Emily. I spent every single day throwing myself into work because I thought the woman I loved traded our future for cash.

Leo tugged on Ryan's jacket sleeve, looking up with big, curious eyes.

Leo: Mister, are you our daddy?

Ryan dropped to his knees again, tears pouring down his cheeks as he looked at the little boy's face.

Ryan: Yes, buddy. I am your daddy. And I am never, ever going away again.

Emily: Ryan, don't make promises to them that you can't keep.

Ryan: I am keeping this promise, Emily. Even if I have to spend the rest of my life earning back your trust.

Emily: Arthur is still the chief executor of your family trust, Ryan. He will destroy you if he finds out about the boys.

Ryan: Let him try. I'm not the naive man I was five years ago. And nobody touches my family ever again.
