An hour later, a silver taxi pulled away from the front driveway, carrying Evelyn and three packed suitcases away from the mansion forever.
Liam and Clara stood on the front porch holding little two-year-old Sophia in their arms, watching the car disappear around the tree-lined corner.
Sophia: Daddy! Look at the big trees!
Liam: They are big trees, sweetie. And this whole big yard is yours to play in whenever you want.
Sophia: My toys are inside?
Clara: All your favorite toys are inside, baby. And you have a huge new bedroom upstairs with a view of the garden.
Liam: Come on, let's show her the rest of the house.
They walked back inside the bright marble foyer, but the heavy, suffocating feeling that used to fill the mansion was completely gone, replaced by light and warm laughter.
Clara walked into the kitchen, looking at the white marble counters where she had stood crying just hours earlier.
Liam: What are you thinking about, Clara?
Clara: I was thinking about how much I hated this kitchen this morning. But now... it feels different.
Liam: We can remodel the whole kitchen if you want. We can tear out these marble counters and put in warm wooden tops.
Clara: No, I like the marble. I just want to fill this room with happy memories instead of tears.
Liam: Starting today, that's exactly what we're going to do.
Liam set Sophia down on the ground, and the little girl giggled as her small shoes squeaked against the polished floor, chasing her favorite soft teddy bear across the room.
Liam: Look at her go. She's already running the place.
Clara: She has your eyes, Liam. She really does look like a Vance.
Liam: She looks like her beautiful mother. And she's going to grow up knowing how strong her mother is.
Clara smiled, wrapping her arms around Liam's neck and leaning in for a soft, loving kiss.
Clara: Thank you for standing up for us today, Liam.
Liam: I will always stand up for you, Clara. You are my wife, my family, and my whole life.
They stood together in the sunlit kitchen, watching their daughter play safely on the floor, knowing that the painful days of secrets, blackmail, and fear were finally over.
