The Secret In The Safe

Pamela: An eviction notice?! For me?! In my own home?!

Mark: It's not your home, Pamela. It never was.

Sarah: Mark, please... the baby is getting restless again. Let's just go.

Mark: Just five more minutes, Sarah. I want her to hear every single detail so she doesn't bother calling my office again.

Pamela took two quick steps toward Mark, her voice shrill and trembling with rising panic.

Pamela: You framed me! You used your law firm credentials to tamper with your father's estate papers!

Mark: I didn't tamper with anything, Pamela. I found the real, notarized codicil inside my father's private safe at the bank last week.

Pamela: The bank safe... you had no authority to open that box!

Mark: I had full authority as the designated trustee named in his 2018 codicil. The same codicil that explicitly removed you as a beneficiary if you ever attempted to mistreat my future family.

Pamela's eyes went wide as her breath hitched in her throat, her pale face draining of all remaining color under the bright daylight.

Pamela: He... he wrote that in his will?

Mark: My father saw how you treated my sister before she moved away to California. He knew you were cruel, vain, and obsessed with money you never earned.

Sarah: Pamela, all I ever wanted was for us to be a family. I tried so hard to please you.

Pamela: Shut up, Sarah! You manipulated my son! You turned him against his own mother!

Mark: Sarah didn't turn me against you, Pamela! Your own disgusting behavior did that! You treated her like a servant in front of our friends, you criticized her cooking, you called her slurs when you thought I wasn't listening!

Pamela: I was trying to teach her how to fit into our social circle!

Mark: Our social circle?! You live off a dead man's trust fund in a suburban mansion! You aren't royalty, Pamela! You're just an insecure bully!

Sarah: Mark... look at her face. She knows it's over.

Mark: Good. Because the sheriff's department will be here at four o'clock to inventory the house.

Pamela took a sharp breath, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she clutched her chest.

Pamela: The sheriff?! You called the authorities on your own mother?!

Mark: I called the estate marshals to make sure you don't pack any of my father's art collection into your bags before you leave.

Pamela: That artwork belongs to me! I picked out those paintings!

Mark: You picked them out with his credit card, Pamela. They belong to the trust fund now. To Lily's college fund.

Sarah: We don't want your clothes or your personal items, Pamela. Just take your things and leave us in peace.

Pamela: You think you've won, don't you, Sarah?! You think you can just step into my shoes and play lady of the manor?!

Mark: Sarah isn't stepping into your shoes, Pamela. We aren't even living in this house. We're putting it on the market next week.

Pamela stared at her son in total shock, her mouth open, unable to form a coherent sentence as the ground beneath her feet completely crumbled away.
