The Final Departure

The front doors of the mansion echoed loudly as Mark pushed them open, stepping out into the crisp, sunlit afternoon air. The long paved driveway stretched out before them, surrounded by manicured lawns and green oak trees.

Sarah let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders finally dropping as the warm sunlight washed over her face.

Sarah: I can't believe it's actually over. I was so terrified when she stood over me earlier, Mark.

Mark: I know, sweetie. I am so, so sorry I wasn't here twenty minutes earlier.

Sarah: You got here right when we needed you. Seeing you step in front of her... I've never felt so protected in my life.

Mark: Nobody will ever put hands on you or speak to you like that again. Not while I'm breathing.

Little Lily quieted down in Mark's arms, her big blue eyes blinking up at the bright sky as she snuggled against her father's chest.

Mark: Look at her, Sarah. She's completely calm now.

Sarah: She knows she's safe with her daddy.

A black sedan pulled up the driveway, stopping right beside Mark's SUV. A sharp-dressed man in a charcoal suit stepped out holding a leather briefcase.

Mr. Vance: Good afternoon, Mark. Mrs. Whitford.

Mark: Hello, Arthur. Is the paperwork ready?

Mr. Vance: Everything is in order. The estate marshal is two minutes behind me, and the locksmith is already parked down the street.

Sarah: Is she really going to have to leave today, Mr. Vance?

Mr. Vance: Under the explicit terms of your late father-in-law's trust, Mrs. Whitford, Pamela's occupancy status ended the moment she engaged in documented domestic hostility against a named beneficiary.

Mark: I recorded the audio from the kitchen on my phone the second I heard her screaming from the hallway, Arthur.

Mr. Vance: That audio will ensure she has zero standing to contest the eviction in court, Mark. You handled this flawlessly.

Sarah: I just feel sad that it had to come to this. A family shouldn't end up like this.

Mark: Pamela destroyed this family years ago, Sarah. We're just building a real one now. A safe one for Lily.

Mr. Vance nodded respectfully, turning toward the grand front entrance as a sheriff's cruiser pulled up the driveway with its lights flashing softly.

Mr. Vance: I'll supervise the lockout myself, Mark. You two go home and rest.

Mark: Thanks, Arthur. Call me if she causes a scene with the marshals.

Mr. Vance: Don't worry, son. She won't have a choice.

Mark opened the passenger side door of his SUV, helping Sarah climb safely inside before carefully securing Lily into her car seat in the back.
